PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Department of Science and Technology of South Africa developed the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Technologies (HFCT) Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Strategy. The National Strategy was branded Hydrogen South Africa (HySA). The overall goal of HySA is to develop and guide innovation along the value chain of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in South Africa. HySA has been established consisting of three Centres of Competence – HySA Infrastructure, HySA Catalyst and HySA Systems. The HySA Infrastructure (Hydrogen Production, Storage and Delivery) Centre of Competence, HySA Infrastructure in short, co-hosted by the North-West University (NWU) and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and directed by Prof Dmitri Bessarabov. In order to address needs of the HySA National Program, functional facilities equipped with technical and admin support staff is required. The position fits within the budget of HySA and addresses some critical technical needs of HySA CoC. The required position will address needs of the project.

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Processes and Operation
  • Early project scoping and development.
  • Ongoing monitoring and review of process engineering, focusing on safety, efficiency, functionality, and quality.
  • Professional supervision of employees within the group.
  • Ensure that all the relevant safety standards are adhered to.
  • Development of conceptual process diagrams and designs
  • Preparation of associated plant documentation such as P&I and process diagrams for manufacturing and procurement
  •  Provide necessary support for preparation of layout drawings and detailed design for projects.
  • Provide necessary support and inputs for the preparation of control philosophy documents and control and automation development processes.
  • Providing necessary support during manufacturing and commissioning activities
People
  • Provide mentorship to new staff and members of the LEDS office. Provide feedback to a line manager and provides input into defining job descriptions.
Budget
  • Define and propose budget estimates for given projects. The candidate is also involved in supplier selection and component selection based on budget constraints.

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • An appropriate Bachelor’s degree in Process Engineering; Mechanical Engineering OR Chemical Engineering (NQF 8).
  • A minimum of 5 years’ coordinating technical inputs across different disciplines and leading a team of engineers to deliver outputs and objectives to quality, on time and within budget.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ of very good expertise in process engineering.
  • A minimum of 5 years of general engineering experience including proposal and business development.
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
  • A comparable Master’s degree would be an advantage.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ relevant professional experience within the oil and gas industry (Hydrogen related experience would be an advantage.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience and knowledge with electrolytic processes such as electrolysis would be an advantage.

  • Ability to prioritise, adapt and work on multiple projects.
  • Ability to develop projects from concept through to execution and operation.
