Introduction
NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY OF ENGINEERING SCHOOL OF CHEMICAL & MINERALS ENGINEERING VACANCY: POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP in Hydrogen Storage Studies EMPLOYMENT TYPE: CONTRACT
Job description

Hydrogen Storage

One post-doctoral fellow position is available at the School of Chemical and Minerals Engineering at the North-West University. The prospective candidate must be able to independently conduct research, document and publish research findings within the School of Chemical and Minerals Engineering.

Hydrogen has the potential to serve as a sustainable alternative to fossil-fuel based sources of energy. The implementation of a hydrogen-based economy has been limited by the economic feasibility of hydrogen storage. Hydrogen’s low density necessitates an increased storage density for economic viability, thus requiring an input of energy in the form of heat, work, or hydrogen-binding materials, ultimately resulting in high investment and operating costs. Liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) systems are being considered a promising technology due to reasonable storage capacity and transportation at ambient conditions. The proposed research serves to investigate the technical and economic potential of LOHCs as a viable means of storage.

The considered candidate must possess a strong background in chemical engineering and have sufficient experience in the following:

  • conducting research on phase equilibria measurements and thermodynamic modelling
  • development of new experimental techniques/equipment for the measurement of thermodynamic data
  • measurement of phase equilibria for chemicals that are important in the liquid organic hydrogen carrier technology applications
  • thermodynamic modelling of phase equilibria measurements using different data treatment methods available
  • address problems in industry related to alternative energy sources and its storage thereof

Minimum requirements

  • Relevant PhD degree obtained within five years before the appointment as a postdoctoral fellow.
  • Record of publications
  • Excellent communications skills and team-work ability.
