Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The incumbent is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the institution, and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate level Operations Research and Statistics.
  • Research in the area of expertise and publish research in accredited conference proceedings and journals.
  • Participate in community engagement activities.
  • Serve in professional bodies as a reviewer, editor, other committees etc.
  • Course development and curriculum.
  • Prepare and conduct student assessments allocated modules.
  • Administrative duties related to the department and school’s activities.

Minimum requirements

SENIOR LECTURER

  • A PhD (NQF level 10) in Operations Research/Statistics.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ teaching experience plus a minimum of two research publications in accredited journals.
  • At least one completed Masters supervision.

LECTURER

  • A master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Operations Research/Statistics.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ teaching experience plus a minimum of one research publication in an accredited journal.

ADDED ADVANTAGE

SENIOR LECTURER

  • Conference proceedings as well as postgraduate supervision.

LECTURER

  • Conference proceedings, publication in an accredited journal as well as postgraduate supervision.

FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (Knowledge and Skills):

  • Ability to teach a variety of Operations Research and Statistics modules.
  • Knowledge of Statistical methods and use of Statistical software.
  • Ability to mentor and supervise research students at honours, master’s and/or co-supervise at PhD level.
  • Ability to conduct basic and applied research in the field of Operations Research and Statistics.
  • Assume administration responsibilities in their department.

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Communication skills/lecturing and people management skills.
  • Interpersonal skills and mentoring skills.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as in a team.
  • Good time management and ability to work well under pressure.
