Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To conduct professional teaching and research in line with NWU teaching and learning and research and innovation strategy as well as financial industry requirements. Provide strategic leadership and ensure that outputs are of excellent quality and on a global standard.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and Learning:

  • Provide formal teaching of Human and Economic Geography for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Coordinate assigned modules withing the subject group and across campuses.
  • Provide study leading of postgraduate students.
  • Uphold a high standard of teaching and learning.
  • Actively drive the development of current and new courses where needed in collaboration with other campuses.
  • Enable technology and new developments to enhance the offering of Human & Economic Geography courses.
  • Manage and partake in student communication and support activities.

Research and Innovation:

  • Conduct and supervise research projects as required.
  • Drive and grow international collaboration.
  • Participate actively in conducting own research and publication and maintain academic scholarship.
  • Support engaged research in the faculty through membership/participation with the Unit for Environmental Science.

Community Engagement:

  • Participate in community engagement activities.

Administration & Medanagement:

  • Develop, initiate, and drive research proposals for external funding.
  • Embark on innovative independent initiatives to obtain funding, facilities and/or equipment to enable research output.
  • Participate in relevant management committees of a research subgroup within the Unit for Environmental Science.
  • Collaborate and build effective relationships for success model delivery.

Minimum requirements

  • An MSc in Geography and Environmental Science (NQF 9) with specialisation in Human or Economic Geography.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ lecturing experience and research in tertiary education environment.
  • Publications in accredited journals.

ADDED ADVANTAGE

  • A PhD in Geography and Environmental Science (NQF level 10) with specialisation in Human or Economic Geography.
  • Membership with the Society of South African Geographers (SSAG).
  • Experience of postgraduate student supervision.

KEY FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (Knowledge and Skills):

  • Good teaching and learning credentials.
  • Proven track record of postgraduate student supervision.
  • Proven track record of successfully applying for research funding.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of papers at national and international academic conferences.
  • Leadership and outreach (community engagement) expertise.
  • Research interest and technical skills and experience in Human & Economic Geography.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Knowledge of the higher education system.
  • Demonstrate language proficiency to function optimally in the multilingual environment of the NWU.
