Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The successful candidate will be based in Potchefstroom, work across all sites of the NWU and report directly to the Maintenance Manager at IT-Electronic Services. S/he need to be an established leader in this field, primarily responsible for high-level maintenance, condition assessment / replacement programs, micro installations and assignable duties concerning electronics across all sites of delivery of the NWU.
 
The Senior Technician will work closely with technical staff across IT and take responsibility for the following:
·         Communication (written and verbal) with- & coordination of clients, colleagues, suppliers, and contractors.
·         be involved in- or guide technical staff / contractors / service delivery for:
· fault finding and repair of difficult faults escalated from campus IT’s;
· final quality assurance audits on newly completed installations;
· condition based assessments on various systems across the NWU and write reports;
· minor/micro installations of systems according to established inhouse project practices;
· projects based on condition assessments per existing practices in ITES; and
· 10% other assignable duties.
 
Regular, full (written and verbal) reports to be given to the manager with respect to all issues mentioned above.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.    Condition based assessments and micro installations.
2.    Quality assurance, administration & coordination of work.
3.    Planning preventative maintenance or -replacement across campuses.
4.    Escalated faults management, 2nd- and 3rd-tier support, contractor liaison.
5. Assignable duties.

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
·         A bachelor’s degree or an Advanced Diploma in Electronics (NQF level 7) with a minimum of 5 years’ proven relevant experience OR a National Diploma in Electronics (NQF level 6) with a minimum of 8 years’  proven relevant experience.
·         IT Qualifications (A , N )
·         Driver’s license – Code EB

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE:
·         Experience in advanced electronic fault-finding including Ethernet and Wi-Fi-based TCP/IP environments, networked and digital environments.
·         Experience in managing version control of software and firmware on digital electronic equipment, adjusting settings to prescribed & loading updates to ensure Cyber Security compliance to pass vulnerability scans.
·         Experience in executing condition-based assessment on-site, writing reports, planning & budgeting to replace required systems or plan preventative maintenance (as may be required) to maintain well-working, healthy systems.
·         Experience in doing quality assurance, update snag lists, note exceptions and drive quality upwards by reporting regular and important deviations.
·         Experience in liaising with contractors, clients, and technical staff on maintaining systems and training to use, maintain or replace systems.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·         In-depth knowledge, understanding, troubleshooting and assessment of analogue and digital: sound systems, amplifiers, communications, TV distribution, fire alarms, intruder alarms, access control, IP CCTV, audio-visual, and e- conference systems
·         Ability to:
  • use different cable and connector types and be able to solder efficiently when required;
  • accurately judge the quality of new installations, longevity of current technologies and assess the condition of electronic systems installed in buildings and elsewhere on NWU sites; and
  • train others in the fluent use of technology and inculcate digital literacy within the users-base.
·         Knowledge of-, ability to effectively, efficiently and effortlessly use:
  • electronic measuring instruments is essential;
  • fault-tracing of equipment on networks, version control, patching, settings, and defaults, is essential and is fast becoming a core competency; and
  • all office and corporate software is a non-negotiable pre-requisite.
·         Ability and willingness to be trained and re-trained in- and adapt to new technologies.
·         Safe working practises and knowledge of SHE requirements that need to be adhered to.
·         Ability to influence colleagues, contractors and staff positively.

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
