Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The purpose of the position is to ensure that efficient and effective services are offered in terms of student sport and recreation, and that the Sport Division on the Vanderbijlpark Campus contributes towards the holistic development of students; while also creating an environment that demonstrates good governance, recreational opportunities, an ethic of care and a contribution towards the creation of a vibrant and differentiating student value proposition.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Management and oversight of the competitive sport.
- Manage and oversee all competitive sports activities on the Vanderbijlpark Campus.
- Identify and initiate development opportunities for competitive sports for NWU students.
- Supervision of all sport-related infrastructure, including maintenance and resource allocation.
- Adherence to and oversight of all OHS matters related to the delivery of competitive sport on the Vanderbijlpark Campus.
2. Management and oversight of recreation and student wellness.
- Manage, oversee, and initiate opportunities for NWU Vanderbijlpark Campus students to participate in recreational activities which contribute towards student wellbeing.
- Supervision of recreational spaces assigned to activities for student wellness and recreation.
- Development, oversight and monitoring of all internal leagues (including Residence Leagues) and sport initiatives.
3. Functional managerial duties.
- Management of financial, operational, logistical, human resources and governance areas within NWU Sport on the Vanderbijlpark Campus.
- Preparation and control of the annual budget and initiation of fundraising initiatives.
- Representation of official NWU structures and effective reporting.
- Due to the nature of the Sport and Student Life environment, the successful candidate will be required to be available after hours and on weekends.
4. Networking, marketing, and recruitment.
- Establishment of annual marketing and recruitment plan for the Sport Division on the Vanderbijlpark Campus.
- Representation of national structures and external federations.
5. Student holistic development.
- Create, manage, and oversee activities to enhance the student experience through sports, to contribute towards the student value proposition.
- Initiate and oversee projects within the Sports Division aimed towards contributing to overall students’ growth and development.
- Initiate and oversee projects and activities to empower students to participate in logistical and operational areas within the Sports Division.
6. OHS and legislative adherence and compliance.
- Ensure that all facilities, activities, and initiatives comply with both internal and external OHS regulations.
- Ensure that activities, projects, and events comply with all internal and external legislative requirements including the adherence towards events as per the SASREA requirements.
Minimum requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree (NQF7) in Sport Management, Sports Science or Business Management.
- Three (3) years of experience in sports management in a tertiary institution and at a managerial level.
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
- Post-Graduate Degree (NQF8) in Sports Management, Sport Science or Business Management.
- Being a part of the University Sport South Africa (USSA)’s Heads of Sport Forum.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Good knowledge of the South African sport environment.
- Ability to function and lead a multicultural team and appreciate the advantages of enhanced diversity.
- High level of understanding of the student value proposition, and the importance of holistic student development through sports activities.
- Knowledge of MS packages, including MS Outlook and MS Teams.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- High level of integrity and adherence to governance requirements.
- High level of professional conduct when representing the NWU on external platforms.
