Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The purpose of this position is to provide a general information service to academic staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and library visitors; to provide informal instruction and assistance in identifying relevant information sources; to accompany library visitors; to assist at the circulation desk and reserved books section; to handle technical enquiries as well as room bookings and to identify gaps in the collection and make recommendations for acquisitioning.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       General loan & information service

  • Provide a general information service and assistance to all students, researchers, lecturers and support staff of the Faculty of Education.
  • Provide assistance at the Circulation Desk/Information Desk.
  • Give general assistance at the Reserved Books and Prescribed Books sections.
  • Assist with WorldCat Discovery and help with the location of sources on the shelves.
  • Train users and research assistants in the use of interlibrary loan requests.
  • Assist with document delivery and interlibrary loan requests.
  • Accept cash for fines.

 

2.       Information Literacy & Training

  • Assist with training of staff and students at the Branch Library.
  • Give online training and support to undergraduate distance students.
  • Provide library orientation to new users.
  • Conduct training for staff and students
  • Collect training statistics
  • Participate in the Information Literacy Task Team events.

3.       Marketing & Liaison

  • Participate in all Library Events including Orientation, Library Week and Open Days.
  • Participate in marketing campaigns of the Branch Library.
  • Assist with surveys and focus interviews.
  • Liaise with staff of the Faculty of Education.
  • Liaise with the Senior Manager: Outreach, Projects and Quality on marketing of the library.

 

4.       Collection Development & Management

  • Identify gaps in the information collection as they become evident during information supply.
  • Select and recommend suitable resources for acquisitioning for the Education Library.
  • Participate in weeding and shelf reading.

Minimum requirements

  • A Bachelor of Library Science (BLIS) or a bachelor’s degree in any field of study with a postgraduate qualification in Library and/or Information Science or Advanced Diploma in Library and Information Sciences (NQF Level 7)

 

ADDED RECOMMENDATION

  • Membership with the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA).

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in an academic library
  • Experience in customer services

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel), e-mail and Internet
  • Practical knowledge of a computerised library system
  • Ability to master the library management system
  • Knowledge of and understanding of the academic structure of a university

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to function independently and as part of a team
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to work systematically and accurately
  • Good interpersonal relationships
  • Good time management skills

 

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
