PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The purpose of the position is to provide quality teaching and learning, strengthen the Subject Group’s research profile, expand community engagement in line with the North-West University’s vision and strengthen the collaboration with industry partners.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and Learning
· Delivery of quality teaching and learning pertaining to the discipline of Urban and Regional Planning.
Research
· Demonstrate excellence in Urban and Regional Planning research by producing peer reviewed articles and external funding
Management
· Senior supporting role in Subject Group
Community Service
· Continue existing community engagement or initiate relevant engagement in the subject group and the School.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Strong knowledge and expertise in urban and regional planning theories and practices, as well as their application in South Africa and the African context.
· Experience in conducting research and publishing in high-quality academic journals on urban and regional planning topics,
· Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor students in urban and regional planning at both undergraduate and graduate levels,
· Knowledge of and experience with community engagement and participatory planning processes, including engaging with marginalised and vulnerable communities,
· Experience in using relevant software and technologies in urban and regional planning, e.g., Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial analysis tools, and data visualization software,
· Knowledge of the history, culture, and social dynamics of South African cities and regions, and an ability to integrate this knowledge into teaching, research, and community engagement activities,
· Ability to develop and manage research projects, as well as secure external research funding from a variety of sources,
· Commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusivity in urban and regional planning practice and education,
· Understanding of the role of urban and regional planning in sustainable development, and a commitment to advancing this goal in South Africa and beyond,

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and community stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
· Ability to execute effective time management.
Minimum requirements
· A PhD (NQF level 10) in Urban and Regional planning.
· Registered as professional planner at the South African Council for Urban and Regional Planners (SACPLAN).
· A minimum of 5 years’ academic experience at a University or other teaching/research institution. And evidence of experience in postgraduate student supervision and peer review publication.
ADDED ADVANTAGES:
· An NFR rating will be considered as an advantage.
· Applicants with teaching experience in transportation planning, planning theory and regional planning are encouraged to apply, as it will be considered an advantage.
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
