Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

To manage the programmes offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Humanities in the Distance Modality.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.     Strategic Management and Planning:

§   Annually, in collaboration with executive committee, strategic planning of programme within context of the UDL to ensure effective management.

§   Meet daily management requirements of all academic programmes of the three faculties pertaining to distance learning.

§   Plan and administer the preparation, implementing and functioning of programmes for distance education.

§   Manage the year programme pertaining to timetables for contact sessions at various learner support centres, and whiteboard broadcasts where needed.

§   Compile annual budget for division and manage it accordingly.

§   Plan and manage daily logistics of all programmes offered by the three faculties in the distance modality.

§   Revise rules and procedures to ensure effective implementation.

§   In collaboration with the Director: UDL-T&L, annually execute a SWOT analysis of academic matters to ensure that NWU remains a leading DL university.

§   If necessary, conduct research, as determined by the Director: UDL-T&L, that models future strategic positioning.

§   Ensure effective strategic planning of the academic administrative component on mega level (vision), macro level (mission) and micro level (planning, management and delivery of programmes).

2.     Administrative support:

§   Updating the year programme as required.

§   Annual revision of policies pertaining to rules and regulations of DL academic programmes.

§   Daily email and other correspondence/reports as required with relevant school directors and Director: UDL-T&L pertaining to operational aspects and delivery of academic programmes of the faculty.

§   Feedback to Manager and Executive committee.

§   Reporting as required to relevant teaching and learning committee pertaining to academic programmes of faculty.

§   Bi-annually updating programme on distance learning website

§   Monitoring all electronic processes

§   Monitor electronic functioning of examination papers as determined by policy.

§   Monitor examination information as well as required information as well as communication and correspondence with students.

§   Provide necessary support for students pertaining to general academic and administrative enquiries, telephonically and by email.

§   Liaise as required with all operational departments within UDL.

§   Monitor delivery, as required, of prescribed works to students.

§   Regular discourse with faculty directors about information and year programme. 

3.     Coordinating:

§   Coordinate distance and e-learning aspects of faculty programmes.

§   Obtain feedback from marketing unit about marketing of programmes.

§   Coordinate, in collaboration with Director: UDL-T&L, impact studies of programmes delivered by the Unit.

§   Coordinate in collaboration with Director: UDL-T&L evaluation of and dealing with fallouts.

§   Schedule meetings quarterly or as required with relevant school directors to coordinated ODL activities.

§   Coordinate open discourse opportunities with identified role players.

4.     Quality Management:

§   Launch research studies to develop and enhance distance effectivity.

§   Launch research studies to develop and enhance distance effectivity.

§   Report as required on visits to LSCs.

§   Monitor and compile policies explaining rules and regulations for managing academic programmes.

§   Regularly report on evaluations by lectures and students and progress, challenged, etc

§   Report to Director: UDL-T&L about important matters.

5.     Ad hoc task:

§   Ad Hoc tasks as required by Director: UDL-T&L.

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

·          Any honours’ degree (NQF level 8) in the study area of Health Sciences.

·          A minimum of 5 years' experience in a higher education institution.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

§   Any Master’s degree (NQF level 9) in the study area of Health Sciences will be strongly recommended.

§   A minimum of 5 years’ senior level management experience.

§   A minimum of 5 years’ experience in academic programme management.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

·          Professional and Academic leadership and skills.

·          Academic Administration

·          Experience in teaching of Health Sciences discipline on Tertiary level.

·          Significant experience of academic programme management, academic programmes, module study guides and study material.

·          Proven knowledge of academic management tasks pertaining to delivery of academic programmed, application of policies and quality assurance and quality control of academic programmes.

·          Proven knowledge of assessment and moderation.

·          Proven knowledge of quality control and quality assurance.

·          Act as strategist on mega, macro and micro level.

·          Knowledge about compilation of reports.

·          Knowledge of various operational departments of UDL.

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

·          Interpersonal relationships

·          Demonstrated language ability to function effectively within the bilingual environment of the NWU.

·          Computer literacy MS Office Word, PowerPoint, email, internet and social networks.

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
