PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The School of Communication has a vacant position in the field of Journalism and Media studies OR Broadcasting
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teaching and learning:
- Teach advanced level courses to a diverse student body, including skills as well as specialty courses in journalism and media studies OR Broadcasting (Radio and Television).
- Teach general communication courses.
- Bring enthusiasm and strong pedagogy to teaching; engage in a practical, hands-on program of teaching; and provide strong mentoring to students.
- Provide curricular leadership in the journalism and media studies OR broadcasting (Radio and Television) program.
- Engage in Scholarly and subject related case studies.
- Provide service to the Institution.
- Provide service to the Community.
- Advise students.
2. Curriculum development:
- Contribute to curricular revision to reflect the latest trends in the field, and to build and expand the broadcasting OR journalism and media studies communication subject group across all campuses.
3. Scholarly work:
- Well established publication record and clear evidence of agenda for continued research in the field of journalism and media studies OR broadcasting (radio and television).
- Participation in research projects with colleagues.
4. Study guidance:
- Provide study guidance to graduate students on an honours, Masters and Doctorate level.
5. Administration and other tasks:
- Responsible for all administrative tasks with regards to the above.
- Study guide development and update.
- Student marks and assessment.
- Share responsibility for committee and department assignments as required.
- Contribute to the Faculty Committees as well as University Committees.
- Participate in services related to the life of the School and the community.
Minimum requirements
- A PhD (NQF level 10) in Communication with Journalism and Media Studies OR Broadcasting as areas of specialisation.
- A minimum of 8 years’ experience teaching undergraduate, honours masters and doctoral students at a reputable tertiary institution.
- A minimum of 8 years’ experience as a journalism and media studies or broadcasting specialist.
RECCOMENDATION / ADDED ADVANTAGE:
- Membership with the South African Communication Association (SACOMM) or Southern African Communications Industries Association (SACIA).
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Within higher education
- Within industry related environments
- Sound understanding of the broad journalism and media studies OR broadcasting (radio and television) discipline.
BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Sound relations with colleagues.
- Able to work independently.
- Ethical principles and academic integrity.
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
