PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Africa Unit for Transdisciplinary Health Research (AUTHeR) is a research unit within the Faculty of Health Science and unique to the R&I in Higher Education in South Africa. AUTHeR hosts several research projects with various focus areas, including transdisciplinary health sciences, health promotion, epidemiology and statistics/biostatistics, health systems, psychosocial well-being and mental health epidemiology. Despite our diversity, all our research is underpinned by two essential principles: co-creation of knowledge through interdisciplinary and community integration. With our research, we strive to make an impact beyond academia.
The purpose of this position is for a senior lecturer/lecturer to contribute significantly to addressing complex health challenges within resource-limited communities in the fields of Public Health, Health Promotion, Health Economics, Epidemiology, Transdisciplinary Health Sciences, Community Nutrition and/or Sustainable Community Development. The appointee will be required to lecture to Master’s students, supervise postgraduate students, contribute to research output by means of publications and conference proceedings and participate in community-integrated research projects.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching-Learning including postgraduate supervision
- Effective teaching-learning practices in a variety of fields (Public Health, Health Economics, Health Promotion, Epidemiology).
- Design, develop, evaluate and improve study guides and curricula as needed.
- Demonstrate advanced lecturing and practical skills in the broader fields of Public health, Health Economics, Epidemiology and Health Promotion.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive teaching-learning academic environment.
Research and innovation activity
- Be responsible for the datasets and outputs of projects.
- Design and conduct research projects, write research reports and prepare applications for research funding.
- Consult regularly with scientists and researchers from different disciplines on the design and analysis of studies.
- Keep current with the latest statistical methods and research methodology to address study requirements.
- Communicate research outcomes through publishing in accredited refereed journals and presenting at scientific conferences and to relevant audiences.
- Develop, maintain and support fund applications and research databases.
- Review case report forms for assigned studies to ensure data is collected appropriately to conduct the analysis defined in the protocol.
Leadership, management, and service to the university
- Develop and maintain strategic and productive research partnerships, connections and relationships with people, groups and organisations at local, national and international levels.
- Build national and international research networks.
- Provide service to the university by contributing to the achievement of its goals.
- Administrative responsibilities in, or on behalf of, the NWU.

- Maintain involvement in community service through which public health, health economics, epidemiology and health promotion knowledge and skills are applied.
- Communicate appropriately and effectively to internal and external role-players.

Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A PhD in Public Health or Health Economics or Epidemiology or Health Promotion (NQF Level 10) (Senior Lecturer)
- A Master’s degree in Public Health or Health Economics or Epidemiology or Health Promotion (NQF Level 9) (Lecturer).
- A proven track record of publications in accredited journals.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in teaching and learning at an academic institution.
- Evidence of postgraduate student supervision.
- Experience in using various types of research methodologies.
- Evidence of the ability to work across disciplinary boundaries.
- Proof of training in human research ethics.
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
- Experience in leading a research group.
- Experience in the management and analysis of epidemiological or clinical data.
- Must be a registered Health Professional with statutory registration (for example, with HPCSA or SANC).
