NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) DIVISION: FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES DEPARTMENT: PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, SPORT AND RECREATION RESEARCH FOCUS AREA POSITION NUMBER: P003155 VACANCY: CHIEF SPORT AND EXERCISE LABORATORY TECHNICIAN PEROMNES GRADE: 9 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The purpose of the position is to provide specialised technical support in the research environment of physical activity, sport and recreation regarding big data sets, managing and maintaining the specialised equipment use in human movement, and integration of various equipment derived signals. General support to researchers related to preparation, calibration and maintenance of equipment to assist in the increase in research quality and productivity.
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Facility Management
  • Management of the research equipment and laboratories to ensure effective space usage and quality assurance of all data
Occupational Health and Safety
  • Responsible for all Health and Safety aspects and reporting within the PhASRec laboratories
Training 
  •    Organise and present training on all equipment to staff and post-graduate students
Data Management
  • Technical preparation of complex data sets, research data management of PhASRec projects and adhering to integrity and ethics requirements
Pesonal Development
  • Skills in data modelling, database management and technical aspects of the research equipment

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  •      A Bachelors Degree in Biomedical Engineering (NQF 7), Human Movement Sciences, or related fields
  •      A minimum of 3 years’ experience in managing and maintaining a research laboratory with sport and exercise equipment.
  •      A minimum of 3 years’ experience in the management of datasets and data analytics programs.
  •      A minimum of 3 years’ experience in working with specialised research equipment in the field of sport and exercise Sciences
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
  •      Sport and Exercise Sciences-related professional membership
 KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES: 
  •      Sport and Exercise Sciences related laboratory and equipment management
  •      Development of SOPs, Quality assurance of measurements
  •      Proficient in computer software such as Python, MathLab and/or R
  •      Knowledge and skills about signal processing, forces, muscle conduction, and movement mechanics as well as fitness and physical assessments with specialised equipment.

  •     Work independently and in a team
  •     Strong sense of problem solving
  •    Excellent work ethics and research integrity
  •    Task completion skills with high accuracy
  •     Excellent administrative skills
