Job description

  • Meet with Indigenous Knowledge holders and practitioners including indigenous leaders
  • Interview IK holders, practitioners and record IK
  • Explain nature of the project to the IK holder, practitioners, indigenous leaders, indigenous communities and give copies of the project description as well as a copy of endorsement by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and / or community leader
  • Oversee the signing of appropriate legal pre-scripts (agreements) with the IK holder
  • Upload information of a number of IK holders to the IK coordinators laptop at times as scheduled by the IK coordinator

Minimum requirements

  • A minimum of a Matric / Grade 12
  • Excellent verbal, written skills (English), Good typing skills and computer literate
  • Knowledge: basic knowledge of office administration and management, computer literacy for example Microsoft applications, basic understanding of IKS related policies, legislation and procedures, fluency in English and any other African language (preferably Setswana)
  • Experience in community work
  • A basic understanding of Intellectual Property Rights, Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) and experience in documenting heritage will be an added advantage
  • Skills and Competencies; strong communication (verbal and written), time management, planning and organizing, negotiation skills, good presentation skills, responsibility, good understanding of local communities and ways of conducting, recoding, documenting indigenous knowledge in local communities, well - presented and professional.

  • Honesty, integrity, leadership, accountability, interpersonal relations, ability to work independently as well as being a team player
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Home grown philosophies such as Botho and good understanding of communal work principles such as confidentiality and respect
 
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
