Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The successful candidate will be based in Potchefstroom and report directly to the Engineering Manager at IT-Electronic Services. S/he needs to have high level knowledge in this field, primarily responsible for Testing Proof-Of-Concepts (POC) for new technology, creating designs that incorporate new technology into existing NWU ecosystems and drafting specifications and planning electronic systems across all NWU campuses.

The Technician will work closely with technical staff across IT and Facilities and take responsibility for the following:

  • Communication (written and verbal) with clients, colleagues, suppliers, and contractors
  • Be an official IT liaison for the department regarding technology integration into networks etc.
  • Be involved in- or guide technical staff / contractors / service delivery for:
    • testing POCs for new technology.
    • creating designs that incorporate new technology into existing NWU ecosystems.
    • create design standards and documentation to be followed by other technicians.
    • work on technology investigation, data gathering and analysis for strategic projects, including Next Generation Classroom AV, Smart Safety and Security, IoT, etc.
    • drafting specifications and planning electronic systems across all NWU campuses.
    • ensure various electronic systems (including server, software, and edge devices) remain operational and up to date.
    • ensure designs adhere to the IT-Electronic Services Cyber Security Strategy.
  • Regular, full (written and verbal) reports to be given to the manager with respect to all issues mentioned above.

Minimum requirements

  • A degree or B.Tech (NQF level 7) OR an Advanced National Diploma (NQF level 7), a Diploma (NQF level 6) 5 years relevant experience.
  • 1 – 5 years’ experience in the electronic system design in any of the following disciplines: AV, Security (Access Control, Surveillance, etc.), IoT and condition monitoring.
  • 1 – 5 years’ experience in the electronic system fault-finding including Ethernet and Wi-Fi based TCP/IP environments, network, digital and analogue environments.

ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:

  • IT qualifications in Networking, Server Maintenance and Software.
  • Code B driver’s license.
  • Accreditations with the AVIXA.
  • 0 – 5 years’ experience in managing version control of software and firmware on electronic equipment and servers.
  • 0 – 5 years’ experience in liaising with IT, contractors, clients, and technical staff on developing systems and training to test, use, maintain or replace systems.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

Electronic system design in any of the following disciplines:
  • AV.
  • Security (Access Control, Surveillance, etc.)
  • IoT and condition monitoring.

Fundamental understanding of electronic circuits principles, including:

  • Ohm’s law.
  • Circuit components (power supplies, resistors, capacitors, etc.).
· Understanding fundamental network principles, such as switches, TCP/IP, hostnames, etc.

· Experience with corporate networks, including DHCP, DDNS, NAC, etc. is a plus.

Basic understanding of control systems or embedded electronics, including the following:

  • Difference between digital and analogue.
  • Inputs (sensors, buttons, etc.).
  • Outputs (electronic lock, motors, etc.).
  • Relay fundamentals (N/O and N/C).
  • Communication protocols such as RS-485, RS-232, etc.
· Efficient use of electronic measuring instruments

· Ability to accurately judge the quality of installations, longevity of current technologies and assess the condition of electronic systems installed in buildings and elsewhere.

  • Excellent liaison skills – with contractors, stakeholders and especially IT
