PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: THE DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL STUDIES AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS IS SEEKING TO APPOINT A NEW PROFESSOR WITH A PARTICULAR INTEREST IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS. THE DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL STUDIES AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS IS IN DIRE NEED OF AN EXPERIENCED PROFESSOR IN CORE AREAS OF FOREIGN POLICY, INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION, INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC RELATIONS, OR COMPARATIVE FOREIGN POLICY.
Job description
Teaching and Learning:
- Teaching & administering of examination of allocated modules.
Research & Innovation
- To be able to publish at least two journal articles in DHET accredited journals or scopious indexed journals.
- Supervise masters and doctoral candidates.
Community Engagement
- Effective participation in community development projects.
Attraction of Grant
- The applicant must demonstrate capability to attract research grant.
Mentorship
- Mentoring and supporting of junior staff members is encouraged.
Minimum requirements
- A PhD (NQF level 10) in International Relations.
- A minimum of ten (10) years’ work experience in teaching and learning, as well as research.
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience pertaining to community involvement.
- The applicant must have supervised to completion (cumulative) a minimum of three (3) PhD and five (5) Masters students, OR a minimum of two (2) PhD and nine (9) Masters students.
- He/she must have a minimum of thirty (30) publication points from peer reviewed journals with; a minimum of ten (10) publications in refereed scholarly journals since last promotion, OR a minimum of four (4) publications in refereed scholarly journals and two (2) scholarly book chapters since last promotion, OR a minimum of four (4) publications in refereed scholarly journals and two (2) peer reviewed working, discussion or occasional papers or two (2) published teaching/lecture modules since last promotion.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
- NRF rating will be an added advantage.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Possess a depth and breadth of specialist knowledge demonstrated in academic area of the core knowledge relating to international relations in order to teach and support learning on international relations courses modules.
- He/she must have attracted research or development funds or educational resources as an Associate Professor since his/her last promotion.
- The applicant must also show evidence of community service. He/she must be registered with the relevant professional body where applicable.
- Practical administrative experience and experience to lead the focus area-International Relations. The applicant will be expected to provide academic leadership and mentorship, teach and supervise both undergraduate and postgraduate students, organize and guide research programmes, undertake further research in his/her area of specialization as well as mobilize resources and high-level scholarship. He/she will also be expected to participate in University, Faculty and School activities such as curriculum development among other administrative duties.
- Consistent track record of excellent teaching across a variety of modules and levels within the international relations discipline, with a PhD degree in international relations.
- Possesses ten years of post-qualification experience at the University level and teaching experience and show evidence of scholarship as attested to by publications (at least thirty journal articles) in academic journals in the field of international relations, including supervision of honours and master students as well as the supervision of PhD students.
- Adequate understanding and application of HEQF framework in a university environment.
- Involvement in community engagement initiatives would be a requirement.
- Evidence of publication in reputable journals and conference proceedings.
- Academic leadership in curriculum development.
- Teaching of honours and undergraduate students as well as the Supervision of honours research projects
- Projecting the good image of the department in terms of recruiting students and maintaining relations with local stakeholders.
- Representing the department in different committee or administrative meetings of the Faculty and School of Government Studies.
- Excellent scholarly publications in mainstream journals in international relations and have an impressive record in postgraduate supervision.
REMUNERATION
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
