PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The main purpose of this position is to assist the Senior Laboratory Technician under the management of the Director of the School of Applied Health Sciences in the day-to-day running of the Physiology undergraduate practical laboratories.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Reporting to work at 07:00 Monday to Friday.
- Ensuring all reagents and apparatus has been prepared by the Senior Lab Technician and is available for current practical.
- Maintaining a clean and neat lab.
- Packing out apparatus for upcoming practical session.
- Arranging the collection of parcels and packages for the lab from the collection offices.
- Assisting with the deep cleaning of the lab at the end of the semester.
- Assisting demonstrators during practical sessions.
- Supervising the completion of the collection sheets by the demonstrators.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Practical lessons
- Preparing of laboratories.
- Removal of chemical and medical waste from laboratories between practicals.
- Assist demonstrators during practical sessions.
- Assist Snr Laboratory Manager with removal of waste of different kinds.
- Assist in organising the inventory.
Administration
- Organisation of storerooms.
- Managing laboratory coats needed for practicals.
- Any other tasks assigned by the line manager related to the main functions of the position.
Courier & Ad-Hoc:
- Checking in with director and the secretary to find out if any tasks need to be completed for the day.
- Delivery and collection of the mail/parcels when necessary.
Minimum requirements
- Grade 12 (NQF level 4).
ADDED ADVANTAGE
- A minimum of one (1) year first-aid experience.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of lab procedures and protocols.
- Experience working with lab equipment.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Good organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Strong administrative skills.
- Ability to keep detailed records.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Must be able to work individually and as part of a team.
- Academic integrity and ethical conduct is of the utmost importance.
- Reliability and punctuality is essential.
- Able to function from a trust perspective.
REMUNERATION
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
