Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
This positions forms part of the IT Infrastructure and Platforms group and focus on the planning implementing and maintaining of all IT-Infrastructure across all campuses of the University. The position's primary emphasis will be on planning and implementing the server and storage estate of the NWU, including but not limited to hyper converged infrastructure, HPE 3 Par storage, Ceph Storage and VMware VSAN technologies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Emerging technology monitoring EMRG (SFIA Level 4):
- Supports monitoring of the external environment and assessment of emerging technologies. Contributes to the creation of reports, technology road mapping and the sharing of knowledge and insights.
2. Project management PRMG (SFIA Level 4):
- Defines, documents and executes small projects or sub-projects. Works alone or with a small team actively participating in all phases of the project. Applies appropriate project management methods and tools. Identifies, assesses and manages risks effectively. Agrees project approach with stakeholders and prepares realistic project plans (including scope, schedule, quality, risk and communication plans). Tracks activities against the project schedule, managing stakeholder involvement as appropriate. Monitors costs, times, quality and resources used takes action where these exceed agreed tolerances.
3. Radio frequency engineering RFEN (SFIA Level 4):
- Investigates and resolves system-wide fault conditions using a wide range of diagnostic tools and techniques. Reconfigures equipment to circumvent temporary outages. Specifies, selects and integrates RF devices in a system. Defines internal communication protocols for transmission over the available frequencies. Reconfigures devices and software to optimise performance.
4. Systems installation and removal HSIN (SFIA Level 4):
- Undertakes or supervises complex installations and de-installations of systems or components, including handover to the client. Develops procedures and standards for installation and handover to maintain and improve the installation service. Schedules installation work around client priorities and resource availability. Ensures adherence to established safety and quality procedures.
5. Configuration management CFMG (SFIA Level 4):
- Proposes and agrees the configuration items (CIs) to be uniquely identified with naming conventions. Puts in place operational processes for secure configuration, classification and management of CIs, and for verifying and auditing configuration records. Develops, configures and maintains tools (including automation) to identify, track, log and maintain accurate, complete and current information. Reports on the status of configuration management. Identifies problems and issues and recommend corrective actions.
6. Storage management STMG (SFIA Level 4):
- Prepares and maintains operational procedures for storage management. Monitors capacity, performance, availability and other operational metrics. Takes appropriate action to ensure corrective and proactive maintenance of storage and backup systems to protect and secure business information. Creates reports and proposals for improvement. Contributes to the planning and implementation of new installations and scheduled maintenance and changes of existing systems.
7. Facilities management DCMA (SFIA Level 4):
- Uses data centre management tools to produce management information on power, cooling and space and investigate issues where necessary. Carries out routine audit and checks to ensure adherence to policies and procedures. Facilitates the implementation of mandatory electrical safety testing.
8. Capacity management CPMG (SFIA Level 4):
- Monitors service component capacity and initiates actions to resolve any shortfalls according to agreed procedures. Applies techniques to control the demand upon a particular resource or service. Contributes to capacity modelling and planning. Supports the design of service component capacity.
9. Specialist advice TECH (SFIA Level 5):
- Provides definitive and expert advice in their specialist area. Actively maintains recognised expert level knowledge in one or more identifiable specialisms. Oversees the provision of specialist advice by others. Consolidates expertise from multiple sources, including third-party experts, to provide coherent advice to further organisational objectives. Supports and promotes the development and sharing of specialist knowledge within the organisation.
10. Network support NTAS (SFIA Level 5):
- Drafts and maintains procedures and documentation for network support and operation. Makes a significant contribution to the investigation, diagnosis and resolution of network problems. Ensures that all requests for support are dealt with according to set standards and procedures.
Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· A Bachelor’s degree (NQF level 7) in Information Technology or a National Diploma (NQF level 6) in Information Technology with relevant IT certifications.
· A minimum of 5 years’ experience in IT infrastructure project management.
· A minimum of 5 years' experience working in an enterprise IT environment.

REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
