Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
Under the supervision of the veterinarian/lecturer, the animal health technician will be expected to work with the veterinarian in charge and follow instructions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Under the supervision of the veterinarian/lecturer, the incumbent will be expected to:
- Prepare for veterinary clinic cases;
- Prepare and assist with student’s practical;
- Prepare/Organise Community service and Outreach; and
- Do follow up of cases under supervision.
2. In charge of Production Animal Section with preparation for the in and outside calls;
Inventory of drugs and equipment in the section;
Maintain and do follow up of hospitalised patients; and
Proper recording of all cases.
3. Assist Postgraduate students with samples collection and their projects when needed.
4. Administration
Minimum requirements
- A bachelor’s degree (NQF level 7) in Animal Health.
- Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).
- A minimum of 3 years’ working experience in veterinary area.
RECOMMENDATION / ADDED ADVANTAGE:
- A Master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Animal Health with Production and Companion Animal as areas of specialisation.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Technical competency in Animal Health: production animal.
- Community service, veterinary clinic and outreach.
- Participation in research.
- Publication

REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
