Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The candidate appointed to this position will be responsible for the teaching of modules in Academic Literacy at the undergraduate level. It is important that the candidate has a research mindset and can be involved in the research that is done in the research entity – UPSET (Understanding and Processing Language in Complex Settings).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and Learning:
  • Take responsibility for a full lecturing load on the ALDE 111 and 122 modules.
  • Participate in all related module administrative tasks within the School of Languages.
  • Guided development of learning materials for academic literacy modules.
Academic Leadership and Administration:
  • Fulfilling management tasks and duties in service of the university, as they arise.
Personal Research and Innovation:
  • Contribute towards the research output of the School of Languages.
  • Post graduate supervision.
  • Participate in the research entities affiliated with the School of Languages.
Social Responsiveness (sharing of expertise and community engagement):
  • Involvement in relevant community service projects.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS):
  • Co-operate with management, OHS officials and colleagues to help everyone meet their legal requirements, while upholding and maintaining general occupational health and safety standards and practices.

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD (NQF level 10) in Applied Linguistics or related field with specialisation in English with focus on Applied Linguistics or related field with English.
  • A minimum of two (2) publication articles in accredited journals.
  • Experience in post-graduate supervision.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ lecturing experience at a tertiary institution.
RECOMMENDATION:
  • Relevant membership with academic bodies or professional bodies (example: SALALS: Southern African Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Society).
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
The successful candidate must:
  • be able to teach Academic Literacy in English at first year level.
  • have obtained a high mark for undergraduate modules equivalent to those they will be expected to teach.
  • be able to time-plan.
  • be available for student consultation on module content.
  • be able do in-person teaching at the Mahikeng campus during the scheduled class times.
  • be able to work with marks spreadsheets.
  • liaise with the cross-campus teaching team.
  • be prepared to learn how to use the Learning Management System (Sakai based – eFundi).
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Have good interpersonal skills.
  • Practice professional work ethic.
  • Have student support experience (for example, SI facilitation, tutoring, peer mentoring).
  • Have the ability and willingness to work with a variety of students.
  • Be passionate about language teaching and learning.

  • Be able to work under pressure.
  • Have Leadership qualities.

REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
