Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Teaching, research and community engagement in isiXhosa Education in the field of Early Childhood Development and Education (0-9 years).

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching
  • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in isiXhosa within the field of Early Childhood Development and Educatio (ECDE) in the different programmes offered – in a combination of distance and contact modes.
Programme and module development
  • Development of new modules and study material in isiXhosa Education in ECDE in the different programmes offered.
Research and supervision
  • Research and postgraduate supervision in the field of isiXhosa Education in ECDE.
  • Research and/or publications in the field of isiXhosa Education in ECDE.
WIL/Supervision
  • Support and assess final year students during work-integrated-learning periods.
Community Engagement
  • Community engagement and stakeholder relationships
 Administrative
  • Administrative tasks, specifically related to the online Learning Management System of the NWU.

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A Professional Teacher’s Qualification in Foundation Phase or a BEd in Foundation Phase or a BEd in ECD with isiXhosa Home Language as LoLT – OR equivalent. (NQF Level 6-8)
  • An Honours degree in ECDE or equivalent (NQF Level 8) – Junior Lecturer
  • A Master’s degree in ECDE or equivalent (NQF Level 9) - Lecturer
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience of ECDE practice in a teaching environment.
  • Valid South African driver’s license
RECOMMENDATIONS:
  • Registered with SACE.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in Higher Education Lecturing on full – or part-time basis.
FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)
  • Knowledge of teaching in different modes of delivery (recommended)
  • Language proficiency to function in a multilingual environment
  • Knowledge and skills in training pre-service teachers to teach in multilingual environments (recommended)
  • Computer proficient – command of Word, PowerPoint, MS Teams for online meetings/classes and Excel. Experience of eFundi will be beneficial
  • Familiarity with the Google platforms (Drive, Forms, Slides and Docs)

  • Good interpersonal relations
  • The ability to work with large and diverse groups of people
  • Ability to adhere to timelines and deadlines
  • Good communication skills (verbal, written and use of technology)
  • Language skills in order to function in the various multilingual environments of the NWU

  • Ability to function effectively under pressure
  • Ability to solve challenges critically and creatively
