Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To manage the day-to-day operations of the Radio Station by ensuring that quality and relevant programmes are developed and broadcasted in accordance with the applicable regulations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
To develop and approve quality programmes:
  • Use outcome of research conducted on listenership to develop relevant programmes according to the listeners’ needs and support the teaching and learning programmes of NWU.
To manage the staff of the Radio Station:
  • Ensure the appointment of presenters and newsreaders.
  • Conduct training of staff.
  • Conduct weekly meetings with staff.
  • Oversee the availability of presenters for each programme.
To ensure the Radio Station’s financial sustainability:
  • Liaise with companies and other industries to secure advertisements to generate income for the station.
  • Manage income generated responsibly.
  • Maintain/increase the listenership of the Radio Station.
To ensure compliance of regulations:
  • Manage the Radio Station according to the regulations laid down by ICASA and SAMRO.
  • Responsibility for the renewal of the Campus radio license.
To market the Radio Station:
  • Conduct events and marketing campaigns that promote a healthy Student Life, academic success and personal growth.
  • Keep a branding kit for marketing purposes such as roll up banners, A frames and feather banners.

Minimum requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree (NQF level 7) in Communication Studies, Journalism, Public Relations, Management or related fields.
  • A minimum of four (4) years’ work experience in the development of Radio Station programmes, as well as the management of staff and/or students.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Ability to plan and develop quality Radio Station programmes to respond to the needs of the listeners.
  • Have knowledge of the radio market, different stations and programme style.
  • Ability to use different software packages relating to broadcasting, production and music scheduling.
  • Good writing skills for the Radio Station.
  • Knowledge of applicable ethics and industry regulations around radio broadcast.
  • Ability to coach and develop talent in others.
  • Knowledge of marketing and advertising within the radio industry will be an advantage.

  • Good communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in higher education environment will be an advantage.
  • Good financial management skills.

REMUNERATION
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
