Job description
- Responsible for assisting of all undergraduate contact and ODL practicals per semester and ordering of undergraduate chemicals/and apparatus.
- Prepare and assemble apparatus as well as needed chemical substances used in a Physical - and Life Science laboratory and fully participate in practical sessions allocated to him/her.
- Perform various practicals in modules according to good practice and standard operating procedures.
- Supervise and mentor students with regards to sample handling, preparation and storage of equipment.
- Maintain the Physical Science and Life Science Laboratory/i@Ji apparatus and chemical store rooms in a well ordered and clean state.
- Regularly check instruments (e.g. balances, spectrophotometers, pH meters) for calibration, services and repair/ordered repair to maintain good working order for practicals.
- Managing medical and chemical waste removal.
- Responsible for all health and safety issues in all Physical- and Life Science laboratories, which include workshop and training attendance.
- Promote and enforce health and safety guidelines (first aid, firefighting and safety controls).
- Mark the practical reports of students as ordered by academic lecturers.
- General laboratory admin and day-to-day management (quotations, orders, stock-taking, logbooks, schedules, compiling standard operating procedures).
- Data capturing and processing with specialised software while preserving data integrity.
- Perform other duties assigned by the head of department.
Minimum requirements
- An Advanced Certificate (NQF level 5) with relevant sub-disciplines in Physical Sciences (Chemistry & Physics) and/or Life Science (Biology; Zoology & / Botany).
- A minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in the management or aid with practical work in Life Science and Physical Science subjects at a university or management of a school laboratory – a position as a teacher in Physical - and Life Science in secondary schools and or tertiary education institutes.
ADDED ADVANTAGE
- Either study towards a relevant degree like B Ed/B.Sc. or B.Sc. Ed. (NQF level 7) with relevant sub-disciplines in Physical Sciences (Chemistry & Physics) and Life Science ( Biology; Zoology & / Botany) OR a relevant teacher qualification, e.g. PGCE (NQF level 7).
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Life – and Natural Science.
- Advanced computer skills.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
- Able to operate in a multi-lingual working environment.
REMUNERATION
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
