Job description

PURPOSE:
These are specialist positions which encompass expertise in the field of multimedia design. The incumbent will work in close collaboration with the Instructional Designers, Graphic Designers and Video Specialists to:
•        design and development digital study material and other educational artefacts,
•        create engaging, dynamic, and relevant course content,
•        develop and design animations, interactive elements, and multimedia artefacts to enhance learning.
Multimedia designers needs to align their design and development to the teaching and learning strategy of the North-West university. 
The multimedia specialists are responsible for the total production process from conception to final delivery, or parts of the production process within the design team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    Planning and Analysis
·         Collaborate with the Instructional Designers when designing and developing instructional/learning materials for multi-modal/blended learning.
·         Work closely with the stakeholders to ensure the continuation of a stable production environment.
·         Identify design principles that align with instructional goals and anticipated learning outcomes.
·         Select appropriate multimedia to support learning, taking into consideration design theory, learning principles, research, and practical factors.
·         Advise on interventions and materials that consider the type of information being delivered and the diverse backgrounds, roles, and varied responsibilities of students and lecturers.

2.    Multimedia Design
·         Design materials in collaboration with the instructional designer, which adheres to the instructional plan as developed by the instructional designer.
·         Translate storyboard requirements into wireframes, scripts for video/audio, animations, and mock-ups.
·         Incorporate/consider characteristics of the target population and environmental characteristics to design the look-and-feel as well as the user interface for the media.
·         Determine the overall scope of instructional programs and/or products that need to be developed.
·         Do production planning the design and development process appropriate for a given project.
·         Design programmable interactions, animations, and navigational structures according to user experience and user interface design principles.
·         Apply appropriate design principles and learning theories during the design and development of multimedia material.

3.    Multimedia Development
·         Ensure multimedia solutions are optimized for integration, performance, usability, and accessibility.
·         Produce instructional materials, animations, and navigational structures according to provided guidelines and storyboards for a variety of delivery platforms.
·         Collaborate with production specialists, instructional designers, and subject matter experts.
·         Apply key concepts, techniques, theories, and principles related to media design (video, multimedia, graphics, animation, illustration, and DTP) to digital instructional media.
·         Populate content and build multimedia objects according to provided guidelines and storyboards.
·         Identify and solve technical challenges to produce various types of instructional products.
·         Provide user-centred design expertise from concept to delivery.
·         Adhere to regulatory guidelines and organizational policies.

4.    Implementation and Evaluation
·         Conduct usability, and user testing of multimedia products to ensure the quality of multimedia products.
·         Optimize products for distribution.

5.    Ad Hoc Tasks and Personal Development
·         Work in cross-functional teams.
·         Complete ad hoc tasks as handed down by line management.
·         Keep up to date regarding new software, new design techniques and theory.
·         Participate in professional development activities.

Minimum requirements

·         BA / BTech in graphic design, digital design, multimedia, or a related field (NQF Level 7)

EXPERIENCE:
·         5 years of MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint on an advanced level)
·         5 years of proficient in graphic design software (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator)
·         5 years of excellent administrative, managerial and project management skills
·         3 years of knowledge and experience with eLearning Software (Adobe Captivate, VYOND, Camtasia, Articulate Studio and Articulate Storyline)
·         3 years of specialised knowledge and experience in multimedia development and programming (JavaScript, CSS and HTML5)

ESSENCIAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Advanced skills in the use of the software packages contained in the Microsoft Office Suite.
·         Advance knowledge, skills and experience with graphic design packages and eLearning Software (Adobe Captivate, VYOND, Camtasia, Articulate Studio and Articulate Storyline).
·         Good Record keeping skills.
·         Knowledge of principles for providing proper customer services.
·         Accuracy and attention to detail to deliver accurate products conforming to applicable quality and usability standards.
·         Advanced technical and computer skills.
·         Specialised knowledge and experience in multimedia development and programming (JavaScript, CSS and HTML5).

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
