P001046PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The purpose of the position of the NWU Art Gallery Curator at the North-West University is to oversee and manage the University's permanent art collection. The position is responsible for acquiring, preserving, and displaying artwork. The Curator also plays a vital role in organizing art exhibitions and events, both on- and
off-campus. Additionally, the Curator may collaborate with Faculty staff and students to incorporate art into the academic curriculum and provide educational opportunities related to the collection. The successful incumbent will be required to work on weekends when necessary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Curatorship and Management
- Responsible for the overall management and curation of the NWU art collection, ensuring its preservation, restoration, and loans.
- Oversee the insurance requirements and evaluations of the NWU art collection to guarantee its protection.
- Catalogue new acquisitions and maintain comprehensive records and archives of the art collection.
- Develop and implement efficient systems, practices, policies, and procedures to streamline operations.
- Provide general management support to ensure the smooth functioning of the NWU Art Gallery.
- Conduct workshops and lectures on art, collaborating with academic programmes to enhance students' understanding and appreciation of the arts.
- Efficiently manage the day-to-day operations of the NWU Art Gallery, including office management and administrative tasks.
- Ensure that all installations adhere to curatorial, conservation, and design standards, maintaining the integrity of the artworks and the gallery space
2. Art exhibitions
- Compile and curate temporary and rotating exhibitions, showcasing a diverse range of artworks.
- Take the lead in initiating, promoting, managing, and coordinating art exhibitions to engage with students, staff and the community.
3. Financial Management
- Monitor and maintain daily budgets for specific exhibitions.
- Submit and format final exhibition budgets to the Finance Division.
4. Marketing
- Utilize marketing strategies and social media platforms to promote the NWU Art Gallery and its exhibitions.
5. People Management
- Manage a dedicated team of staff, overseeing their tasks and fostering a positive work environment.
6. Occupational Health and Safety
- Adhere to all OHS regulations and apply all health and safety procedures.
Minimum requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art, Art History or related field
- A minimum of 5 years’ people and operational management experience in an Art Gallery, Museum, or related department.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of contemporary South African art or any background regarding Art Galleries.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent work ethics and trustworthiness.
- Experience in curatorial and exhibition management.
- Financial management skills.
- Well-developed organisational and planning skills.
- Relevant and proven administrative experience.
- Deep appreciation of art.
- Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

- The ability to identify and solve problems.
- The ability to work as part of a team and apply good time management.
- Meticulous attention to detail
- Good communication skills, client service orientation and the ability to work with and liaise with colleagues and suppliers.
Remuneration
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
