Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The employee will be expected to contribute significantly to the teaching effort of the department, school, faculty, other organisational units or an interdisciplinary area. An academic at this level is also expected to play a major role in scholarship, research and/or professional activities.
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and Learning
LECTURER:
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions and studio sessions.
- Initiation and development of subject material.
SENIOR LECTURER:
- The conduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions.
- Conduct Teaching and Learning productivity, output and quality aligned to the Teaching and Learning Plan
- Enable technology and new developments to enhance the offering of Teaching and Learning.
- Recommend academic development to improve teaching and learning outputs.
- Drive and grow international collaboration.
- Partaking in student communication and support activities.
- Initiation and development of subject material.
Development and Supervision
- The preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
- Supervision of the program of study of postgraduate students engaged in course work.
- Teaching activities include initiating and developing unit materials and may include the supervision of postgraduate students.
Research and Innovation
LECTURER:
- Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects.
- The conduct of research.
- Involvement in professional activity.
SENIOR LECTURER:
- Supervision of Masters’ and PhD students.
- The conduct of research.
- Involvement in professional activities.
- Drive research productivity, output and quality aligned to the Research Plan.
Development of Course materials
- Development of course material with appropriate advice from and support of more senior employees.
- Marking and assessment.
- Consultation with students.
Minimum requirements
LECTURER:
- A Master’s degree in Economics (NQF level 9).
- A minimum of two (2) years’ lecturing experience plus a minimum of one research publication in an accredited journal.
SENIOR LECTURER:
- A PhD degree in Economics (NQF level 10).
- A minimum of five (5) years’ lecturing experience.
- At least two research publications in an accredited journal.
ADDED ADVANTAGE
LECTURER:
- Professional membership with ESSA.
- Proven contributions in conference proceedings.
- Post-graduate supervision.
SENIOR LECTURER:
- Professional membership with ESSA.
- Proven contributions in conference proceedings.
- Post-graduate supervision.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of Mathematical Economics and Econometrics at postgraduate level.
- Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), email and internet.
- Knowledge in Statistical software (Eviews and stata).
- Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance.
- Research outputs.
- A proven commitment to teaching and learning, including a willingness to become involved in students’ educational development and wellbeing.
- Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.

- Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
- Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
