EMPLOYMENT TYPE: FIXED-TERM APPOINTMENT (8 MONTHS)
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Temporary replacement appointment for an employee for a limited period not longer than twelve (12) months. Priority will be given to candidates from the designated groups to create opportunities for their career development.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teaching of undergraduate Academic Literacy components and associated work, such as creating and marking assessments and doing material development.
- Fulfilling administrative tasks and duties in service of the university as a whole, as they arise.
- Should be able to teach academic Literacy skills that involve Reading and Writing in English to a cohort of mainly first year students.
- Facilitate inter alia face-to face teaching, group activities, online assessments/tutoring and personal consultations.
- Be able to produce learning and assessment material for the modules involved and assess and report student performance.
- Be able to lecture to large classes and present online lessons and use blended learning/teaching approach.
- Contribute towards content development in the module.
Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Honours degree in Languages (NQF 8) in English with a focus on Applied Linguistics OR related field with English on 3rd year level or higher.
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
- Tutoring experience will be an advantage.
- Teaching/marking Academic Literacy or English for Specific Purposes or Language for Specific Purposes or Practical language subjects for undergraduates.
FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS).
- Be able to teach Academic Literacy in English at first year level.
- Have obtained a high mark for undergraduate modules equivalent to those they will be expected to teach.
- Be able to time-plan.
- Be available for student consultation on module content.
- Be able do in-person teaching at the Potchefstroom campus during the scheduled class times.
- Be able to work with marks spreadsheets.
- Liaise with the cross-campus teaching team.
- Be prepared to learn how to use the Learning Management System (Sakai based – eFundi).
BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES.
- Be able to create a positive learning environment;
- Be able to work well in a team; and
- Be punctual and able to adhere to strict deadlines.
