Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Academic position at Senior Lecturer Level in the Department of Setswana, School of Languages, Mafikeng Campus. The incumbent will be expected to be involved in the teaching and learning of undergraduate and postgraduate modules, participate in research activities, as well as community engagement activities, within the Faculty of Humanities.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       Teaching and Learning:

  • Take responsibility for a full lecturing load as regards Setswana modules (undergraduate and postgraduate modules), including preparing for classes and guided development of learning materials.
  • Related administrative tasks, such as submitting marks and monitoring student progress.
  • Setting of tests and examinations, as well as marking assessments.
  • Hold office hours for consultations with students.
  • Attend meetings (with subject group, teaching team, and/or module tutors).
  • Act as module co-ordinator where necessary.
  • Supervision of postgraduate students.
  • Internal moderation of assessments.
  • Records management; maintaining module files for Internal and/or External Programme Evaluation.

 

2.       Research and innovation and/or Creative Outputs:

  • Contribute towards the research output of the School of Languages.
  • Present at national and international conferences.

 

3.       Academic Leadership and Administration:

  • Fulfilling management tasks and duties in service of the university, as they arise (for example, serving on Faculty Board or relevant committee).
  • Good organisational and administrative skills.

 

4.       Social Responsiveness (sharing of expertise and community engagement):

  • Involvement in relevant community engagement projects.

 

5.       Occupational Health and Safety (OHS):

  • Cooperate with management, OHS officials and colleagues to help everyone meet the legal requirements, whilst upholding and maintaining general occupational health and safety standards and practices.

Minimum requirements

  • A PhD degree (NQF level 10) in Setswana Linguistics/Language and/or Literature.
  • A minimum of two (2) years’ work experience and proven track record of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at university (Teaching is done in Setswana)
  • Active involvement in research, as evidenced by a minimum of two (2) publications in accredited journals.
  • Proven experience in the presentation of papers / posters at national and / or international scholarly conferences.
  • Applicant should be active in community engagement projects.
  • Experience with postgraduate supervision.

RECOMMENDATIONS / ADDED ADVANTAGES:

  • Membership of relevant subject-specific societies and organisations.
  • Experience with curriculum design and/or module design.
  • A qualification in Translation and Interpreting (with a language combination from English/Afrikaans into Setswana) will be an added advantage.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Excellent Setswana language & communication skills.
  • Good understanding of grammatical analysis and linguistics in Setswana.
  • Good knowledge of African/Setswana literature.
  • Online and in-person facilitation of teaching-learning.
  • Excellent level of computer literacy and experience with LMS systems, MS Teams, Outlook, MS Office and the internet.

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
