NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (VANDERBIJIPARK CAMPUS) FACULTY OF LAW VC SCHOOL OF LAW UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME POSITION NUMBER: V000206 VACANCY: SENIOR LECTURER PEROMNES GRADE: A7 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION Involved in teaching and learning (undergraduate and post-graduate programmes); research which fits into the faculty’s focus areas; provide leadership and fosters excellence in research; post-graduate supervision (where applicable); community service and tasks which relates to all above activities. Expected to exercise responsibility in professional activities in the academic disciplines within the faculty.
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Teaching and Learning:
  • Teaching and learning at undergraduate level including supervision of LLB dissertations. Involvement at PG level including supervision, critical reading, examination, moderation, and any other responsibility as required. 
 Research and Innovation:
  • Conducting own research which fits into the faculty’s focus areas. Creative research output in accordance with the level of appointment. This includes publication, conference attendance and presentation, workshops, and colloquia.
 Academic leadership, management, and administration/ university service
  •  Involvement in Administration and Management responsibilities. Participation in leadership roles within the faculty, membership in faculty committees as and when requires, administration and service to the university by serving on institutional structures. 
 Community and scientific Engagement/ Social responsiveness  
  • Sharing of expertise and service to the scientific community. Involvement in community engagement and social cohesion, including media commentary, serving on review structure inside and outside the faculty/university, promotion of the university image and internationalisation.
Occupational Health and Safety
  •   Adherence to the OHS standards and policies of the university. Participation in the OHS committees as and when required

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  •     An LLB Degree (NQF 8) 
  •     An LL D in any field of law or a PhD/DPhil in Law OR an LLM plus 5 years' post admission experience in private practice or 7 years post admission experience in public prosecution.
  •     A minimum of 5 years’ experience in academia as a Senior Lecturer.
  •     Evidence of extensive independence and initiative in research.
  •     Publications in accredited journals.
  •     Proven record of effective post-graduate supervision.
 ADDED ADVANTAGE:
  •     Member of Legal Practice Council.
  •     A minimum of 5 years’ admission as an attorney or an advocate or experience in legal practice.
 FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)
  •    Preference will be given to candidates with expertise concerning teaching-learning and research in the field of Private Law and/or Commercial Law. However, candidates with expertise in any other legal field will be considered.
  •    Legal language skills.
  •    Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, MS Teams and PowerPoint), as well as email, Internet and the electronic retrieval of legal sources.
  •    Language skills to function optimally in the different multilingual environments of the NWU.
  •    Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g. whiteboard technology, eFundi, etc.) to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.

  •    Good interpersonal relations and high-level EQ.
  •    Good communication skills (verbal and written).
  •    The ability to work with large groups of people.
  •    The ability to accommodate multiculturalism.
  •    Good analytical abilities and innovative thinking, as well as ability to be self-driven.
  •    Good time-management and problem-solving skills.
  •    Good planning and organising skills as well as good report writing skills.
  •     A high level of professional and ethical conduct.

REMUNERATION:
