Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The candidate will be responsible for lecturing undergraduate and/or postgraduate statistics modules and can also be expected to be involved in the development of new modules. Other duties include the supervision of honours students.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       Teaching and learning:

  • Presenting undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules.
  • Development of new modules.

2.       Research and Innovation:

  • Supervision of honours students and studying towards a PhD degree/supervision of postgraduate students.

3.       Money stream 3

  • Participate in other money stream 3 endeavours, such as the presentation of short courses.

4.       Administration / Management:

  • Help with administrative and management tasks within the subject group.

 

Minimum requirements

  • A master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Mathematical Statistics or related.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience teaching undergraduate and honours courses.
  • Plans of pursuing a PhD (NQF level 10).

RECOMMENDATIONS / ADDED ADVANTAGES:

  • A PhD (NQF level 10) in Mathematical Statistics.
  • Membership with the South African Statistical Association (SASA)

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

  • The candidate must be able to:

·        analyse data using advanced statistical techniques by means of suitable statistical computer packages (such as SAS, R, SPSS and STATISTICA);

·        provide guidance with regards to data collection;

·        present both undergraduate and postgraduate statistics modules;

·        act as group coordinator for modules with multiple groups;

·        handle large undergraduate classes;

·        supervise honours students; and

·        communicate well in English (verbally and in writing).

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
