Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To oversee and manage merchandising, including retail, wholesale, and corporate gifts. To oversee and manage the execution of special projects. The Section Head will be responsible for developing and implementing merchandising strategies, managing, and coordinating multiple projects simultaneously, and collaborating with cross-functional teams and external partners to ensure the success of these initiatives.

1.    Management Managing of Retail Stores and Warehouse             
  • Develop and execute the merchandising strategy and plan, working closely with cross-functional teams including marketing, sales, and product development.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, vendors, and other external partners to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of merchandise.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to develop and implement merchandising initiatives, including product launches, store refreshes, and promotional campaigns.
  • Identify opportunities to improve merchandising processes, systems, and tools, and develop and implement solutions to optimize efficiency and effectiveness.
 
2.    Managing of Wholesome and Corporate Gifts
  • Ensure the Unit’s financial sustainability through budgeting and monitoring of income and expenditure.
  • Manage and coordinate wholesale and corporate gifts accounts, ordering of stock and driving of sales.
  • Oversee the tracking of ordered stock to ensure that stock is delivered timely.
  • Oversee the processing of orders and ensure that customers sign off before stock is ordered.
  • Manage quality control when stock is received before it is delivered to customers.
  • Manage the placing of wholesale and corporate gift orders.
 
3.    Managing of Special Projects
  • Manage and coordinate special projects simultaneously, ensuring that they are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Monitor and report on project progress, providing regular updates to stakeholders and addressing any issues or delays.
  • Ensure the effective management of staff and coordination of merchandising and projects.
  • Manage and motivate team members, providing guidance, coaching, and support to ensure their success

Minimum requirements

  • A relevant bachelor’s degree (NQF level 7) or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 5 (five) years’ experience in merchandising and project management, with at least 2 (two) years’ experience in a management role.

ADDED ADVANTAGES/PREFERENCES:
  • Experience with retail merchandising, including store layout, product placement, and promotional campaigns.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Advanced: Knowledge and thirst to investigate, innovate, and develop trends and creativity with an emphasis on merchandising and projects
  • Proficient: Knowledge of principles for providing customer and personal services.
  • Knowledge of tertiary environment
  • Language Ability to function within the multilingual policy of the University and its different target audiences
  • Advanced: High level of competency in terms of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Teams.
  • Driver’s licence and willingness to travel
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of supply chain and inventory management principles and practices.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate team members.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve issues quickly and effectively.

  • The ability to give knowledgeable advice with regards to merchandising, best practice and integration with different marketing campaigns to strengthen the NWU brand attributes and message.

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
