Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
·        This is a specialist position which combines an educational background and instructional design skills within an e-learning environment. The Instructional Designer (ID) is responsible for the instructional design and development of interactive multimedia products and digital study material. The ID will overall be responsible for the evaluation and quality assurance of all the interactive multimedia products and web-based educational material. The ID is responsible for the project management of allocated projects. As a change agent the ID provides relevant and responsible instructional design guidelines and advice to lecturers and other role-players regarding projects by way of liaison, consultation, and training.
·         An important aspect of the IDs job will be to design and develop training material and to enhance teaching and learning. A strategic input of the ID will include the research, development and innovative implementation of applicable technologies and media. As such the successful integration will depend on the ID’s consultation with and advice for lecturer, to contribute to the successful achievement of the department’s vision to stimulate quality education at the North-West University.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.    Instructional design advice and training within Higher Education
2.    Analysis and planning of learning and teaching curricula, activities, and material
3.    Design of instructional solutions
4.    Development of instructional solution
5.    Implementation and evaluation of learning and teaching curricula, activities, and material
6.    Project management of Instructional Design projects
7.    Ad Hoc and personal development

Minimum requirements

·         Master’s Degree in Education Design - Instructional Design / Computer Assisted Education / Curriculum Design (NQF Level 9)

EXPERIENCE:
·         3 years’ experience Instructional design and development of: multimedia and web-based/-supported products; learning material in a learning management system
·         3 years’ experience in management of assigned projects within a multidisciplinary team approach
·         3 years’ experience in training and support to staff in the use of electronic learning environments
·         3 years’ experience in specialist / technological skills

ESSENCTIAL COMPETENCIES:
 
Learning activity design and development:
·         Proven track record of individual consultations with lecturers in the areas of learning and assessment activities in their modules, as well as new modules for existing and new qualifications
 
Project, collaborative, and team management skills:
·         Proven ability to collaborate with and lead multifaceted teams which may include, Educational Technologists, Multimedia Developers, Videographers, and Graphical Designers, to assist lecturers with the design and development of digital study material

·         Experience in managing multiple projects, demonstrating well developed organisational skills and a capacity to act independently within established guidelines.
·         Manage team members and lead them in the creation of fit-for-purpose teaching and learning material
·         Demonstrated ability to work well within a collaborative team environment, develop productive relationships quickly, and sustain a client service orientation.
Technology integration/ facilitation of adoption skills:
·         Support lecturers to explore new and emerging technologies to enhance the learning experience of students
·         Guide lecturers in the thoughtful use and application of the various Learning Management System (LMS) tools to support sound pedagogical teaching and learning approaches
·         Knowledge and ability to determine the instructional needs of lecturers for implementing electronic education

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
