Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Manager will be responsible for management of DVC R&I strategy across the various portfolio departments, faculties and stakeholders to ensure that projects are executed and completed on time. The incumbent will also be responsible for developing and managing portfolio reports and special projects, co-organisation of key R & I events and general communication to internal and external stakeholders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.    Portfolio Strategy Management:
· Coordinate and manage DVC R &I Strategy involving seven KPA’s:
  • Generate new knowledge through high quality publications and scientific leadership;
  • Improve research capacity by nurturing the next generation of researchers;
  • Improve international stature and visibility of scholars and research outputs;
  • Intensify research internationalisation and impact through international partnerships and collaborations (finalise after developing;
  • Support and sustain an ecosystem for conducive creation of IP and commercialisation;
  • Identify mechanisms to improve External Research Income locally and beyond; and
  • Accelerate eResearch and Innovation services and systems to support full cycle of research conduct and management.
· Develop reporting frameworks and maintain the reports.
· Compile aggregate report from faculties, analyse and generate trends to inform decision making.
2.    Developing and Managing Portfolio Reports and Special Projects:
· Take the lead in developing reporting framework and spearhead the compilation of the following reports:
  • R&I Annual Report
  • R&I combined operational plan
· Manage special projects as needed:
  • Ensure a well-managed DVC R & I Office.
  • Provide support to DVC R&I in managing all portfolios reporting to the DVC.
  • Attend meetings on behalf of the DVC R&I as needed.
  • Assist the DVC in compiling submissions to committees.
  • Follow up on outstanding critical actions and execute, etc
3.    Co-organisation of key R & I events:
· NWU R&I Colloquium
· NWU R&I Excellence Awards
· Stakeholder Engagements in conjunction with Faculties
4.    Communication:
· Communication with internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
·         A Master’s degree (NQF level 9).

EXPERIENCE:
·         A minimum of 3 years’ experience in project management.
·         A minimum of 3 years’ experience within the higher education sector.
·         A minimum of 5 years' managerial and operational experience in research and innovation.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
·         A PhD (NQF level 10).

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Project management from inception through to conceptualisation, development and implementation of project management plans, standard operating procedures and effective management of the project timeline.
·         Project Planning & Execution - Develop necessary protocols, manuals and operational guidelines for the strategic projects.
·         Sufficient level of technical background to accurately and objectively evaluate project risks.
·         Planning, organising, supporting, supervising, disseminating, higher degrees support projects.
·         Managing multi-phase projects.

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Good interpersonal, organisational and problem-solving skills.
·         Time management and ability to meet strict deadlines.
·         Discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information.
·         Strong interpersonal skills including mentoring, coaching, collaborating, and team building.
· Strong analytical and planning skills with the ability to manage competing demands.

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
