Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Teaching, research and community engagement in the field of Early Childhood Development and Education in English Home Language Education.

JOB DESCRIPTION

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching

  • Teaching several modules in ECDE English Home Language Education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels – in both distance and contact mode

Programme Development

  • Curriculum development, among others developing study material and study guides for ECDE English Home Language Education modules in the different programmes

Research and Supervision

  • Research and postgraduate supervision in the field of ECDE English Home Language Education, with appropriate publications

Work integrated learning

  • Work-Integrated Learning / Teaching Practice

Community Engagement

  • Community Service

Administration

  • Administration of assignments, assessments, marks, resources, etc. 

Minimum requirements

  • A Master’s Degree in ECDE English Home Language Education OR equivalent with indications of research involvement (NQF 9).
  • A Professional Teacher’s Qualification in Foundation Phase Education OR equivalent OR a clear indication of re-routing towards ECDE (NQF 6-8).
  • A minimum of 2 years teaching or working in school settings in Foundation Phase (or relevant experience similar to the mentioned)

ADDED ADVANTAGES

  • A minimum of 2 years lecturing experience on full-time or part-time basis, and
  • Professional registration with SACE.

Functional / Technical Competencies (Knowledge and Skills)

  • Driver’s license 
  • Innovative teaching and lecturing skills
  • Skilled in teaching English Education to ECDE students (for children aged 0-9)
  • Comprehensive IT skills and knowledge
  • Ability to function in the multi-lingual NWU environment
  • Functional knowledge of education sector / systems
  • Skills, experience and knowledge to develop undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in ECDE
  • Research competencies that contribute to the advancement of English within ECDE
  • Excellent command of the English language to teach in English as the Language of Learning, and
  • Teaching and competency in at least one other LoLT (preferably Afrikaans (or SeTswana))

REMUNERATION

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
