Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Operational activities

·        Performance of analysis, involvement in sample reception, logging, analysis, quality assurance and reporting.

Result interpretation

·        Interpret and report results and take appropriate action.

 

Method development, validation, quality assurance and accreditation

·        Participate in the quality assurance process as outlined in ISO 15189.

 

General laboratory maintenance

·        Ensure that laboratory equipment is at all times maintained.

·        Effective and efficient inventory management.

Continuous professional development and registration

·        Working toward the accreditation as a medical scientist or appropriate naming at the appropriate qualification body.Liaise with external clients.

·        Answering enquiries by Pathologist/Dr’s as instructed by manager.

·        Customer satisfaction and complaints feedback

Ad hoc tasks

·        As directed by Manager

Academic support

·        The support of academic staff or students as per instruction by manager.

 

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:

·         1 Year experience working with a LIMS.

·        Compiling worksheets and process all specimens in the Lab. 

·        Proficient analytical preparation.

·        Know-how to operate an LC/GC-MS.

·        Enter all results onto LIMS.

·        Make sure that positive results are being treated as URGENT.

·        Perform maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting and internal and external quality controls. All of these actions are documented in the relevant Books of life.

·        Record temperatures of fridges, freezers, and incubators on the relevant charts. Take action if readings are out of limit and document each action taken.

·        Implement safety rules and SOP’s.  Ensure all safety rules are adhered to and keep Safety Data Sheets updated.

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

·        Proven ability to work in a multicultural environment.

·        Ability to work under pressure.

·        Ability to take instruction and guidance well.

·        Ability to remain calm in a stressful situation.

Minimum requirements

·        A Bachelor’s Honours degree (NQF level 8) in Biochemistry/ Analytical Biochemistry or related field.

·        A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in laboratory analysis.

·        Proficiency working with GC/LC-MS systems, with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience.

·        Registration with HPCSA.

 

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
