Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To fill a vacant position in the History in Education Subject group to ensure quality teaching and learning; to strengthen the Subject Group’s research profile; to mentor junior academic staff, and to expand community engagement.

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching & Learning
Strong Teaching and Learning Portfolio with the following criteria: 
  • Participation in teaching
  •  Design and implementation of learning environments (face-to-face and blended)
  • Utilization of LMS/online platforms, teaching-learning technologies
  •  Effective assessment practices.
  • Reflection on student feedback (quantitative and qualitative).
  • Reflection and peer evaluation on the depth of subject knowledge.
  •  Satisfactory student success rate (throughput).
  • Conference and workshop attendance in the relevant discipline and teaching and learning.
  • Participation in excellence awards of Teaching and Learning.
  • Partake in lecturing classes at post and undergraduate levels in History in Education
  • Managing teaching and learning processes for the distance as well as on-campus mode of delivery Publish articles and book chapters, as well as presenting papers conferences
  • Programme and curriculum development of new under and postgraduate level degrees, diplomas, and certificates, as well as short learning programs in History in Education
  • Knowledge and competence in integrating ICT platforms in teaching and learning
Research
  • Demonstrate the ability to supervise at postgraduate research level.
  •  Proven research competence in the field of History Education. 
Community Engagement
  • Involvement with and/or more teaching or research activities at a community level and community engagement in projects and service learning
  • Service the broader higher education community environment with clear evidence on a national and international level 
  •  Involvement in community engagement /implementation of expertise

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  •  A PhD in History Education OR in Education with specialisation in History Education (NQF Level 10).
  •  A minimum of 5 years’ experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of History in Education
  • Extensive research of various publications in accredited journals on History in Education and book chapters is essential
  • An average of 2 publications per year since the last promotion or improved consistent publications
  • Experience and track record of supervision of completed at least 2 Master’s supervision and involvement in PhD supervision in History in Education is essential
 
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
  • HASHT registrations is desirable.
  • Membership accreditation with any other History Education related professional bodies is desirable
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
 
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective time-management skills
  • Computer literacy (MS office, knowledgeable about cloud storage) Experience in teaching and learning material development
  • Competent in the use of a variety of teaching, learning, and assessment methodologies
  • Fundamental knowledge in teaching, learning and assessment of History Education at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Development of in teaching and learning material
  • Managing teaching and learning processe4ss for the distance as well as on-campus mode of delivery
  • Publish articles and book chapters, as well as presenting papers at conferences
  • Involvement in community engagement/ Implementation of expertise
  • Programme and curriculum development of new under postgraduate level degrees, diplomas and certificates as well as short learning programs in History in Education.
  • Knowledge and competence of integrating ICT platforms in teaching and learning supervision of masters’ and doctoral students
