Job description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To manage research outputs and productivity in line with the NWU strategy for Research and Innovation, provide academic leadership and guidance on post graduate programme development, and joint accountability for the integration of research outputs into Teaching and Learning
JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategy Development
- Co-determine the Research Plan and joint accountability with Deputy Dean Research and Innovation1 for the implementation thereof
- Jointly accountable for the successful implementation of the NWU Teaching and Learning plan
- Translate the Research Plan into a campus implementation plan and operationalise
Research and Innovation
- Drive and manage research productivity, output and quality aligned to the Research Plan
- Create an enabling research environment and manage resources inclusive of staff, Masters- and Doctorate students, facilities and equipment
- Collaborate, guide and recommend academic development and capacity building to improve research outputs
- Participate in post graduate programme development and guide innovation initiatives
- Joint accountability with Deputy Dean Teaching and Learning1 for planning the operationalisation of the academic offering
- Joint accountability to drive the integration of research outputs into teaching and learning to enhance professional qualifications and graduate employability
- Manage escalated post graduate queries and co-recruit Masters- and Doctorate students
- Manage and coordinate research grants and NRF ratings
- Drive and grow international collaboration
Research Entity
- Direct and manage a financially sustainable research entity to enable contribution to the financial position of NWU through 3rd stream revenue
- Manage day-to-day functioning, finances, budget, resources and assets
- Promote the image of the entity and embark on conscious marketing efforts in respect of research expertise
- Drive business ventures and maintain sound public and private partnerships to facilitate income driven research contracts and projects
- Select researchers to participate in programmes and guide capacity building initiatives to maintain research quality
- Manage the integration and participation of Masters- and Doctorate students in programmes within the entity
Marketing and Funding
- Develop, initiate and guide research proposals for external funding
- Embark on innovative independent initiatives to obtain funding, facilities and/or equipment to enable research output
- Promote and consciously market research expertise to enable funding
- Collaborate and build effective relationships for success model delivery
Management and Leadership
- Programme and Research entities effectiveness, joint accountability
- Stakeholder relationship development and effectiveness
- Corporate governance conformance, reporting and risk management
- Cost management and cost-effectiveness
- Processes and systems design, implementation, effectiveness and efficiency
- Personal effectiveness, wholeness and development

Minimum requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A PhD in the relevant discipline (Educational Research for Social Transformation; HIV and AIDS in Education, Action Research (all genres) for Educational Transformation, Wellness of School Communities (NQF 10)
- Membership of appropriate academic and professional networks.
- Professional registration where applicable.
- Appropriate academic and professional networks.
- A minimum of 6 years’ specialist and professional leadership experience in the relevant industry.
- A minimum of 6 years’ significant experience in higher education.
FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)
- Thorough knowledge of the RSA Higher Education system.
- Well-developed information and communication technology proficiency.
- Acceptable management accountancy proficiency.
- Acceptable contract development and management proficiency.
- Aptitude in managing the research-innovation value chain.
