Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The subject group of Public Governance and Management seeks to fill a position of a senior lecturer. This requires an experienced senior academic who can teach, conduct cutting-edge research and participate in meaningful community engagement initiatives within the School of Government Studies. The candidate should hold a doctoral degree and is required to possess knowledge of the disciplinary epistemological, methodological, axiological and ontological discourses. Their core areas of specialisation should include public policy studies, research methods, governance and technology usage. Extensive teaching experience, academic leadership role, supervision of postgraduate candidates and publishing journal articles serve as critical requirements to this position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and Learning:

·        Teaching & administering of examination of allocated modules.

Research and Innovation:

·        To be able to publish at least two Journal articles in DHET accredited journals or scopious indexed journals. Supervise master’s and doctoral candidates.

Community Engagement:

·        Effective participation in community development projects

Administrative Responsibilities:

·        Be able to assist students with basic inquiries.

Minimum requirements

·        A PhD in Public Administration Science (NQF Level 10).

·        A minimum of 3 years’ experience in Teaching and Learning of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

·        A minimum of 3 years’ experience in doing research, producing journal articles and conference attendance.

·        Evidence of Community Engagement

·        Evidence of membership/registration with Professional Bodies.

 

FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)

·        Possess a depth and breadth of specialist knowledge demonstrated in academic area of the core knowledge relating to Public Administration to teach and support learning on relevant modules.

·        Practical administrative experience and experience to lead the focus area-Public Administration.

·        Consistent track record of excellent teaching across a variety of modules and levels within Public Administration discipline, with a PhD degree in Public Administration.

·        Possesses three years of post-qualification experience at the University level and teaching experience and show evidence of scholarship as attested to by publications (at least five journal articles) in academic journals in the field of Public Administration, including supervision of honours and master students. Supervision of PhD students would serve as an advantage.

·        Understanding and application of HEQF framework in a university environment.

·        Involvement in community engagement initiatives would be a requirement.

 

BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES

·        Evidence of publication in reputable journals and conference proceedings.

·        Academic leadership in curriculum development.

·        Teaching of honours and undergraduate students as well as the supervision of honours research projects.

·        Projecting the good image of the department in terms of recruiting students and maintaining relations with local stakeholders.

·        Representing the department in different committee or administrative meetings of the faculty and school of government studies.

 

REMUNERATION:

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
