Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
 
To perform teaching duties at senior lecturer or associate professor level in the sub-group Biochemistry, and research duties (including postgraduate supervision) in the Focus Area for Human Metabolomics. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.    TEACHING AND LEARNING
·         Teaching at undergraduate and honours level
2.    REASERCH AND INNOVATION
·         Lead research and supervise students at masters and doctoral level within research entity
3.    COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
·         Be involved in social and academic communities and activities
4.    MANAGEMENT TASKS
·         Management and other tasks at subject group, focus area and faculty levels

Minimum requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
·         PhD in Biochemistry / Molecular Biology.
·         5 years’ experience in Higher education teaching and learning.
·         5 years’ experience in Higher education research and postgraduate supervision (MSc and PhD).
·         Progressing research record (H-index) and experience as Principle Investigator.

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Advanced knowledge of human-related cell - and molecular biology.
·         Proven competency in molecular biology techniques and related omics-technology.
·         Willingness to perform research on human health, and other related topics within the Focus Area for Human Metabolomics.
·         Ability to lecture introductory and advanced biochemistry on a tertiary level with a specific inclination towards teaching molecular biology.
·         Capacity to learn various teaching philosophies and ability to flawlessly adapt teaching and learning approaches when required
·         Excellent computer skills and competent using teaching and learning, and administrative software such as MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), eFundi, MS Teams, Zoom.
·         Advanced knowledge of relevant research and statistical software such as Matlab, R, SPSS, etc.
·         Excellent communication and networking skills.
·         Ability to write high-quality scientific manuscripts.
·         Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU.
·         Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
·         Good administrative, planning and coordination skills.
·         Have existing NRF rating or willing to obtain a NRF rating within the near future.

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
