Introduction
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
As a senior representative of the Faculty of Education, manage the operational delivery to achieve the unitary Faculty strategy and plan. In addition, provide functional and academic leadership and quality assurance across campuses and in distance education in respect of Teaching, Learning, and Research in Language Education, and in Community Engagement projects. Direct and manage the B.Ed programme as an integrated programme across campuses of the NWU and in the distance mode of delivery ensuring the quality of all administrative processes and the quality of the aligned academic offering.
This process also includes a supplementary role of Director for the School of Language Education.
Job description
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching and Learning
· Promote excellent learning and teaching in the School of Language Education and reposition the NWU to attain the size and shape required by market direction decisions
Research and Innovation
· Intensify research and innovation in the school
Community Engagement and Service Learning
· Integrate and align community engagement and service learning with core activities (teaching and learning and research) and promote sustainability principles.
Student value
· Develop a clearly differentiated student value proposition
Staff development
· Develop and retain excellent staff and create an equitable staff and student profile
People management
· Leadership and management; manage employment equity, diversity and transformation
Risk and compliance management
· Risk management, compliance and business continuity
Minimum requirements
· PhD in Language Education or in equivalent field, for example Applied Linguistics (NQF Level 9)
· Professional qualification in language teaching methodologies / didactics (NQF Level 7)
· Completed postgraduate supervision and a record of research output
· Functional and subject related experience in primary and or secondary teaching environments
· Functional and subject related experience in a tertiary environment (Supplementary Director’s role 5 years)
· Management experience in a tertiary environment (Supplementary Director’s role 5 years)
· 5 years senior leadership position for the supplementary Director’s role
ADDED ADVANTAGE & PREFERENCES:
· SACE Registration (desirable)
· Research in multilingual pedagogies
· Compliance with promotion policy criteria or the academic level of the relevant applicant
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
· Subject knowledge: English
· Teaching skills: English Language Methodology and Didactics
· Experience in programme and module development (on both pre- and postgraduate level)
· Functional knowledge of the B.Ed programme
· Assessment competencies
· Computer literate (Microsoft Office Suite)
· Supervision and/or co-supervision of postgraduate qualifications
· Experience in project(s) on Community Engagement
