Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Junior Instructional Design (ID) position combines innovation in curriculum and multimedia to support academic programmes at the NWU. This supports include knowledge and experience in the delivery of hyflex, blended and online learning approaches.
The Junior ID works in close collaboration with Senior Instructional Designers, Educational Technologist, Multimedia Designers and SME’s in the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation of modules and programmes, design, development of digital study material, training material and other educational artefacts, quality assurance of learning artefacts and learning activities, project management of allocated projects along with a variety of administrative tasks to ensure efficiency. To ensure optimal learning, the incumbent must see to the proper alignment between stated outcomes. As a change agent, the Junior ID provides relevant and responsible instructional design approaches to project team members through liaison, consultation, training and participation in research, development and innovative implementation of applicable technologies and media.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
·         Honours degree Learning Design / Learning Technology / Instructional Design / Media Design is essential.

ADDED ADVANTAGE:
·         Master’s degree in Education / Learning Design / Learning Technology / Instructional Design / Media Design is desirable.

EXPERIENCE/S:
·         3 years multimedia design and development (web & multimedia) within the higher educational context is essential.
·         1 years’ experience in the instructional design of projects and responsibility for projects within a multidisciplinary team approach is desirable.
·         1 years’ experience in the facilitation of learning/ workshops or professional development opportunity is desirable.

KEY FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Sound knowledge of and skills in all the Microsoft Office programs
·         Knowledge of and experience in graphic-design packages and e-learning software (Adobe Captivate, Articulate Studio and Articulate Storyline)
·         The ability to specialise in multimedia development and basic programming (JavaScript and HTML5)
·         The ability to design multimedia products across a variety of software packages (Adobe Suite, Articulate)
·         The ability to work independently and under management leadership
·         Knowledge and ability to determine the e-learning needs of clients
·         Knowledge with regard to the instructional design and development of quality teaching/learning materials for successful e-learning.
·         Knowledge of the academic and administrative functions for successful e-learning.
·         Knowledge and management of electronic delivery systems and the application possibilities of the information technology.
·         Knowledge and experience in the application of learning theories.
·         Knowledge and experience in the application of instructional design principles in Higher Education.
·         Knowledge and application of quality assurance principles in multiple and multifaceted projects.
·         Knowledge of international trends and innovations in electronic learning.
·         Specialist / technological skills with reverence to media design
·         Project and time management skills
·         Maintain and create links with other Higher Education institutions and participate in communities of practice relevant to Teaching and Learning design.

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.    INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN ADVICE AND TRAINING:
·         Provide faculty with guidance and advice regarding the appropriate instructional solutions in a multi-modal/blended learning environment.
·         Conduct training in the development and use of instructional/learning material.
·         Apply concepts, techniques, and theories of instructional design to learning and performance improvement.
·         Participate in professional development activities by networking with other Universities.
·         Analyse the characteristics of existing and emerging technologies and their potential use.
·         Assist the senior instructional designers in new module development.

2.    PLANNING AND ANALYSIS:
·         Conduct a needs assessment to determine the nature of a learning or performance.
·         Identify and recommend potential teaching and learning solutions.
·         Identify the scope of required content in accordance with needs assessment findings.
·         Analyse existing instructional products to determine adequacy or inadequacy of content, instruction, and learning.
·         Plan instructional programs and/or products to be designed, developed, and evaluated.
·         Play an active role in Curriculum Delivery and Innovation research projects.

3.    DESIGN OF INSTRUCTURAL SOLUTION:
·         Identify instructional strategies that align with instructional goals and anticipated learning outcomes. Specify and sequence the anticipated learning and performance outcomes.
·         Select appropriate technology and media to enhance instructional interventions, considering theory, research, and practical factors and apply appropriate interaction design and interactive learning principles.
·         Design interventions and materials that consider the type of information being delivered and the diverse backgrounds, roles, and varied responsibilities of students and lecturers.
·         Identify the learning processes and outcomes to be measured and ensure that assessment is aligned with instructional goals, anticipated learning outcomes, and instructional strategies.
·         Create storyboards and get sign-off from senior instructional designer and SME’s
·         Do research on the use of emerging and innovative technology in teaching and learning practices.

4.    DEVELOPMNT OF INSTRUCTURAL SOLUTIONS:
·         Develop multimedia materials that align with the content analyses, proposed technologies, delivery methods, and instructional strategies.
·         Develop specifications that serve as the basis for media production.
·         Collaborate with other production specialists and subject matter experts to produce instructional materials in a variety of delivery formats.
 
5.    IMPLEMENTATION AND EVALUATION:
·         Implement (publish and distribute) the designed and developed instructional solutions.
·         Revise instructional solutions based on data.

6.    AD HOC TASKS AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT:
·         Work in cross-functional teams.
·         Complete ad hoc tasks as handed down by line manager.
·         Keep up to date regarding new software, new design techniques and theory.  

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
