NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) DIVISION: NWU VICE-CHANCELLOR POSITION NUMBER: N000339 VACANCY: VICE-CHANCELLOR & PRINCIPAL PEROMNES GRADE: P1 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: FIXED-TERM CONTRACT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION To be a Chief Executive and Accounting Officer of the university with the final responsibility for the executive management of the institution within the authority determined by the NWU Council. To embrace the university's values and to position the university as a leading transformational university in Africa and globally.
Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Personal Responsibilities and Joint Accountabilities:
 
1.      Leadership, transformation, governance, and compliance:
  • Provide leadership, accelerate, advance, direct and manage NWU into a sustainable, unitary, transformational university within an effective management system.
  • Uphold the Higher Education Act and ensure that an institutional plan is developed, updated, and executed efficiently and effectively.
 
2.      Teaching and Learning:
  •  Advance the core functions of teaching-learning, research, and implementation of expertise to be a knowledge-oriented institution of high repute.
 
3.      Research, Innovation, and Technology:
  • Increase research intensity; improve technology transfer and innovation.
  • Develop the best information and communications technology to support the core business.
 
4.      Community engagement alignment and integration:
  • Promote sustainability principles by increasing work-integrated learning, increasing the number, and impact of community engagements.
  • Maintain and build strong relations with communities and communities of practice.
 
5.      Student value proposition:
  • Promote and build a vibrant student life aligned to the values of the institution.
  • Promote and increase social cohesion, diversity awareness, integration, and vibrant student life across and within NWU campuses.
 
6.      People and Culture resources / Management:
  •  Ensure continued empowerment and well-being of staff and students in their relationship with the university as an institution striving towards client satisfaction and equity in accordance with the Higher Education Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Improve the engagement, culture, and climate measure of the university.
  • Ensure that the employment equity plan is implemented and adhered to.
 
7.      Infrastructure, Finance, and Facilities
  • Ensure that a sound policy framework and administrative processes and systems are maintained to ensure compliance and to mitigate risks to ensure sound financial management and practices.
  • Strengthen the material basis of the university, including the maintenance and development of appropriate infrastructure and facilities.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of a sustainable funding model.
  • Ensure prudent financial sustainability.
  • Increase second-and-third income streams to enhance the financial objectives of the institution.
 
8.      Communicate, engage, build, and maintain Strategic Relations
  • Maintain, build, and promote strategic relations on a regional, national, and international level.
  • Communicate effectively with both the internal and external stakeholders of the university.
  • Adhere to and promote the value system of the university.
  • Integrate communications, monitor, and direct the development of a greater NWU brand equity.

Minimum requirements

  • PhD/Doctoral Degree.
  • Ten (10) years’ experience, with a proven track record in professional leadership comprising of:
Ten (10) years’ operational experience, inclusive of 5 years at Senior Management level.

 
ADDED ADVANTAGES & PREFERENCES:
  • MBA or business qualification.
  • Business experience and exposure to Higher Education environment would be regarded as an advantage.
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results orientation.
  • Strong problem-solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate and manage effectively at all levels of the organization and with staff at remote locations, are essential.
