Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Teaching and learning support:
·       Providing support for geology theory and practical sessions
·        Providing support in sample preparation including thin sections and geological and palaeontological material for teaching and learning purposes and curation of museum material
·       Provide research support for Geology, Soil science and Agriculture.
·        Assist in organising and supervision of field mapping and excursions
 
General support:
·       Laboratory and infrastructure/equipment maintenance
·        Technical school support
·       Health and safety officer & Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
 
General administrative duties:
·       Sourcing materials and equipment
·        Inventory management
 

Minimum requirements

·     BSc in Geology
·     Experience in general handy man tasks (essential)
·     Experience in using appropriate laboratory and field instrumentation (essential)
·     Experience in sample preparation (desirable)
·     Experience in the maintenance of relevant equipment and microscopes (desirable)
·     Experience in the preparation of material and instrumentation for practical lessons
·     Training in using Acutom to manufacture thin sections and polished sections
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Knowledge of geological material.
·       Effective time management skills
·       Project management skills.
·       Communications skills.
·       Ability to interact with students and staff.
·       Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally (writing and verbally) in the various multilingual environments of the NWU – on all levels (students, colleagues, and management).
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Ability to work effectively independently and in a team
·       Good organisational skills
·       Ability to function under pressure
