Job description

1.    Teaching and learning
 
Teaching Computer Science modules at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
Mentoring project students at Honours level.
 
2.    Research
 
Conducting scholarly research in the key areas of the School and research center .
Publishing in high impact journals and books.
Supervision of masters and doctoral students.
Writing of research proposals and securing funding.
 
3.    Management and administrative
 
Planning, implementing and evaluating the school’s teaching-learning programmes and other activities.
Developing own professional and academic leadership and management skills, with a view to academic leadership and effective quality management in the school.

Minimum requirements

·         PhD Computer Science and Information Systems or relevant / related subject is essential.
·         Membership of Professional IT/CS/IS societies is desirable.
 
EXPERIENCE
 
·         Approximately five years’ experience in teaching at university level.
University teaching at undergraduate and post-graduate level - or relevant industry experience at the discretion of the interview committee. 5 years’ relevant experience is essential.
·         Supervision of Masters and PhD-students.
Independent supervisor of M and PhD students 3 years (minimum) is essential.
·         Research skills.
A proven research track record within Computer Science fields 2 years (minimum) is essential.
·         Management skills.
A proven track record of management experience of two (2) years is desirable.
·         Community service.
Involvement in the community with subject related projects is desirable
 
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
 
·         Teaching of Computer Science modules at undergraduate as well as postgraduate level.
·         Ability to provide guidance in master’s and PhD degree dissertations.
·         Perform administrative and management tasks.  
·         Maintaining good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
·         Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally (writing and verbally) in the various multilingual environments of the NWU – on all levels (students, colleagues and management).
·         Assist / take the lead with module / programme development. 
·         Liaison with industry for co-operation and projects / funding.
·         Conduct independent and co-operative research within the focus areas of the School and research centre.
·         Planning, implementing and evaluating the school’s teaching-learning programmes.
 
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
