Introduction
NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY: HEALTH SCIENCE DEPARTMENT: CENTER OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS EDUCATION VACANCY: ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ SENIOR LECTURER PEROMNES NUMBER: A6/A7 POSITION NUMBER: P000404 PERMANENT-FULL TIME Purpose of the position: A senior academic in the CHPE has resigned and leaves the employment of the NWU on 30 September 2021. This creates a significant risk for the CHPE as well as the Faculty of Health Sciences, as the unit is unable to deliver on its commitments with only two remaining academics.
Job description

Functional/Technical competencies (Knowledge and Skills)
·       Expertise in SoTL research and innovation activity in higher education T&L in a blended environment, with some experience in health professions education.
·       Expert knowledge of the scientific and ethical requirements for SoTL projects within the higher education environment.
·       Planning and facilitation of appropriate workshops aimed at faculty development and implementation of strategic faculty projects.
·       Excellent problem-solving skills regarding the key performance areas.
·       General computer literacy (Windows MS Office, Excel, use of e-mail and internet) with additional knowledge and skills of qualitative analysis software (Atlas.ti®) for SoTL research purposes.
·       High standard of interpersonal and communication skills (including appropriate language skills to function in the multi-lingual NWU environment) and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Recommendations
·       A track record of research activity, including refereed publications and postgraduate student supervision (A7= 1-2 Masters delivered and 1 PhD in process. A6= 3-4 Master’s and 3-4 PhD delivered)

Minimum requirements

·       Undergraduate qualification: BSc Hons or equivalent 4-year degree (Education; Higher education; Health Professions Education) NQF 8
·       Postgraduate: PhD and suitable profile (Curriculum Development) NQF 9/10
·       Memberships of academic societies/councils/associations in the relevant fields (i.e HELTASA, ISSOLT, SAAHE, AFRIPEN)- Senior Lecturer: at least 2 memberships. Associate Professor 3 or more memberships.
·       Proof of applicable experience in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in academic and research area *
·       Proof of expertise related to lecturing in higher education; theory and practice (face to face, blended/hybrid, online) *
·       Use and development of LMS, online platforms, teaching-learning technologies *
·       Proven sound practical experience and/or service delivery in the field of faculty development*.
·       A demonstrated (proof of dates and activities) commitment to teaching and learning development, including a willingness to engage with academics’ development and welfare as university teachers. *
·       Strong personal qualities and collegial approaches that contribute to the development and maintenance of a positive academic environment, which can be proven.
·       Evidence of own continuous professional development to learn and improve as an effective higher educationalist.
·       Level of professional and ethical conduct indicated in a letter from any recent employer or referee.

Responsibilities:
Teaching- Learning and community involvement
·       Apply expert knowledge, skills, and competencies in higher education practices in health sciences.
·       Provide expert professional training and mentoring in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in Health Professions Education and other faculty development processes.
·       Expand and improve mentoring programmes, teaching-learning development and innovation on Higher Education Teaching and Learning for academics.
·       Evaluate the quality of teaching and learning in the faculty and implement improvement processes for the health science curricula, modules, study guides and lecturing practices.
 
Research and community involvement
·       Develop and extend own focused research expertise and outputs in SoTL within the health professions education domain.
·       Develop and maintain strategic and productive partnerships connections and relationships with other academics in the faculty, as well as people, groups, and divisions in the NWU, and on local, national, and international levels.
·       Actively promote collaborative SoTL research between the CHPE, CTL and the different schools and entities within the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the rest of the NWU.
·       Work effectively with colleagues in the CHPE post-graduate programme and projects to enhance the quantity and quality of research outputs, provide post-graduate supervision, examination, and mentoring.
·       Share expert knowledge in SoTL research as critical reviewer in scientific committees and for accredited journals.
 
Leadership, Management, and service to the University
·       Serve on CHPE committees, faculty committees and task teams, and where needed, represent the FHS on NWU committees and task teams.
·       Actively participate in academic organisations relevant to Higher Education and Health Science Education to expand the academic network and to service the larger community in these fields.
·       Demonstrate project management skills in the implementation of NWU and FHS strategic higher education priority projects.
·       Build capacity in the FHS to enlarge the SoTL footprint in all schools.
 
Social responsiveness
·       Maintain involvement in community service as a scholarly practice
·       Build and expand professional relationships and execute activities by which health science education skills and knowledge are made relevant to the community.  
·       Embrace engaged scholarship involving academic staff, civic engagement and professional engagement involving staff using their professional expertise.
