Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.      Teaching and learning:
·       Lecturing of under- and postgraduate geology modules
·       Preparation of material and instrumentation for practical instruction
·       Presentation of practical contact sessions
·       Consultation with students
·       Compilation and marking of tests, assignments, and examination papers
2.      Geology and environmental geology focused research:
·       Research and publication of results
·       Participation in postgraduate program including supervision for Hons, MSc and Ph.D. students
·       Acquiring research projects and funds
3.      General administrative duties

Minimum requirements

·     PhD in Geology
·     3-5 years’ lecturing experience (in Geology)
·     3 years’ experience in geological field mapping organisation
·     3-5 years ‘experience in the use of appropriate laboratory and field instrumentation
·     Experience in supervision of Hons, MSc and PhD level at a tertiary institution (essential)
·     Proven record of research in the form of publications in ISI journals (essential)
·     Proven record of acquiring research projects and funding (desirable)
·     SACNASP registration or in process of obtaining registration (desirable)
·     NRF rating or the potential to obtain (desirable)
 
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Knowledge in providing training in geology.
·       Effective time management regarding responsibilities.
·       Project management skills.
·       Communications skills.
·       Ability to interact with students and staff.
·       Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally (writing and verbally) in the various multilingual environments of the NWU – on all levels (students, colleagues and management).
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Ability to work effectively independently and in a team
·       Good organisational skills
·       Ability to function under pressure
