NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (MAFIKENG CAMPUS) FACULTY/ DIVISION: FACULTY OF HUMANITIES POSITION NUMBER: TBR0046: VACANCY: RESEARCH PROFESSOR PEROMNES GRADE: A5 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: FIXED-TERM APPOINTMENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION One of the Faculty of Humanities’ research and innovation portfolio’s key strategies is to develop and sustain an academic mentorship, as well as a capacity building programme, for novice researchers. Task teams, consisting of faculty staff members, have been appointed in 2019 to suggest implementable plans on how to take these key strategies forward. Based on the ground work that these task teams have done it is essential that a strategic appointment is made to ensure that this specific and important goal of the faculty is taken forward. Consequently, the purpose of this strategic appointment will be to: • Develop, maintain and sustain a mentorship programme for young researchers who have completed a PhD and are starting a research career, researchers who are in the process of becoming established researchers. • Manage a capacity building programme for these researchers. • Maintain her/his own research outputs. This position will be a two-year contract appointment with specific required outcomes.
Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

·       Develop, maintain and sustain the Faculty’s academic mentorship programme
·       Together with Deputy Dean R&I, research and school directors:
Identify staff members who have just completed their PhD’s
Identify staff members who are in the process of becoming established researchers
Develop a mentorship programme for each of the above-mentioned individuals.
·       The purpose of this programme will be to assist these colleagues to:
Focus their research and work towards an NRF rating
Develop and improve their research knowledge and skills
Become accomplished Post Graduate study leaders
Grow into mentors themselves
·       Manage a capacity building programme for novice researchers

·       Establish and maintain a capacity building programme with regard to all aspects related to research. This can include the development and improvement of knowledge and skills in:
Research approaches and methodology
Being an accomplished study leader
Academic mentorship
Academic writing and publishing

·       Maintain her/his own research outputs
·       Maintain own research career with outputs.

Minimum requirements

 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
·       PhD Degree
·       A well-established publication record
·       Project & finance management
·       Project & people management skills within the Higher Education academic domain
·       5 years established research record
·       5 years established record of supervision of Post Graduate students
Recommendation: Retired post 65 research professor who have extensive experience as a research project leader and as study leader for higher degree students.

·       Experience in research and project management.
·       Understanding of and familiarity with the higher education research domain.

·       Has the ability to mobilise and inspire others towards shared goals.
·       Demonstrates effective communication skills, negotiation skills, persuasive skills, good interpersonal skills and well-reasoned decision-making ability.
·       Can think strategically and operationalise this thinking into plans and projects.
·       An individual who can operate confidently and sensitively across cultures and other divides and the ability to operate confidently and sensitively with respect to issues of diversity, transformation and equity.
