Job description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.      FIELDWORK
·       Manage and facilitate the deployment of staff and students to field projects both in SA and abroad.
·       Overseeing and controlling technical performance of field measurements, including instruments, ancillary equipment and field infra-structure
·       Organisation and execution of standard operating procedures,scheduled maintenance as well as all technical (instrumentation and operational) upgrades
·       Day to day management of aspects regarding running of the station, student’s stations field work and data quality, station data security and data transfers to archives/partner access.
·       Data collation (quality control & quality assurance), transfer
 
2.      MANAGE LABORATORY.
·       Manage and maintain the fixed and mobile laboratory by keeping up to date gasses & monitoring equipment
 
3.      ADMINISTRATION
·       Procurement of all project related research equipment and consumables
 
4.      MAINTENANCE OF ATMOSPHERIC MONITORING EQUIPMENt
·       Equipment must be calibrated at all times and ready for deployment
 
5.      SAFETY
·       Manage of laboratory and fieldwork safety
·       View, Initiate, develop, promote, maintain and review measures to ensure the health and safety of employees and students at work
·       Report on health and safety matters relevant to the allocated area of operation
·       Assist with discussing health and safety matters and make written recommendations to the employer

KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Servicing and handling specialised equipment
·         Problem solving and identification in equipment
·         Ability to do research in the library and on the internet
·         Project management/planning & maintenance management
·         Knowledge and experience in electricity and installation rules thereof
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Computer Related Hardware, software installations as well as integration with data logging systems
·       Excellent problem solving skills
·       Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
·       Good administrative, planning and coordination skills
·       Ability to operate and maintain atmospheric measurement instrumentation


Minimum requirements

·       Diploma in Electronic Engineering
·       Qualified Millwright (Electrical and Fitting)
·       First Aid level 1
·       6 years' experience in project management/planning and maintenance management
·       4 years' experience in managing, maintaining and operating the air quality monitoring station

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
