Job description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Conduct risk-based compliance and assurance audits within the Internal Audit department, covering various aspects of the audit process, which will include risk assessments, preparing audit programmes, executing the audit procedures promptly, maintaining clear and complete documentation of work papers and preparation of clear and concise audit reports for audit clients. All work performed should be in line with the IA Code and Standards. Data analytics and CAATS should be used on a continuous basis.

JOB DESCRIPTION
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.      Conduct risk-based compliance audits following IA Standards
  • Conduct compliance and risk, control and governance audits and related assignments following the NWU and IIA’s code and standards
2.      Conduct other risk-based assurance audits
  • Evaluation of governance, risk management & controls for improvement of systems/processes at the university-specialised
  • Conducting risk-based audits and related assignments within the internal audit standards to ensure high-level quality of audit work
3.      Assist with other types of audits
  • Perform special investigations/verifications/year-end procedures and ad hoc duties at the request of management
4.      Financial verifications
  • Evaluation of the accuracy of financial information on the financial system
5.      Administration
  • Administration (Proper filing of working papers / up to date leave records and administrative requests/processes, etc.), personal development (attending workshops and courses as per PDP), client services and adhering to the values (integrity, commitment, accountability and respect) of the University and professional body
 


Minimum requirements

·       B. Com degree in Financial Accounting / Auditing / Management Accounting / Law
·       B. Com Hons. Degree / Post Grad. Diploma in Internal Auditing / LLB / Fin Accounting or 4 year LLB
·       Membership: IIASA
·       3 years of audit experience in performing compliance-related audits or in a regulative environment
·       5 years experience with working on computerized audit software package
·       5 years advanced level on MS Office (Word / Excel)
ADDITIONAL
·       Certified Internal Auditor or studying towards
·       3 years completed learnership / articles or traineeship (CA/SAIPA/IA)

 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·       Sound knowledge of and insight into the execution of risk-based audits (advanced)
·       Good understanding of financial systems and financial data analysis (advanced)
·       Good computer skills, specifically in MS Office (Word and Excel) (advanced)
·       Good report-writing skills (advanced)
·       The ability to be self-driven and work independently (advanced)
·       The ability to manage conflict (advanced)
·       Business insight and expertise
·    Change Management: Identifying, anticipating and recommending the need for changes to the annual audit plan in response to changing risk profiles and business needs, as well as identifying and developing leading-edge audit methodologies and best practice
·       Stakeholder engagement: Developing a good level of relevant business and audit experience
·       A valid driver’s licence

KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·       The ability to be self-driven and work independently
·       Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU
·       Excellent verbal communication and report-writing skills
·       The ability to be self-driven and work independently
·       Effective time management skills, the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
·       Ability to liaise internally and externally on different levels
·       Effective recordkeeping
