NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY OF HUMANITIES SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES POSITION NUMBER: P002283 VACANCY: JUNIOR LECTURER/ LECTURER/ SENIOR LECTURER PEROMNES GRADE: A9/A8/A7 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The incumbent will be responsible for the teaching & Learning requirements for modules related to linguistics and language technology curriculum, and will also contribute to research within the subject group and assist with the development of software and resource related products.
Job description

1.    Research
·         Research in the field of natural language processing, with a preference for research on text processing for South African languages. It is expected of the incumbent to generate own research funds, and to publish in accredited local and international journals and conference proceedings. S/he will also initiate research projects and take leadership in the research programme of CTexT. S/he will also guide junior researchers in projects they engage upon.
2.    Teaching
·         Teaching of relevant courses related to computational linguistics and language technology, both on an undergraduate and post-graduate level. The incumbent will be involved in curriculum design and management of the language technology programmes at the university. S/he will be intensively involved in supervision of postgraduate students and will as such improve her/his profile to attract more post-graduate students.
3.    Development
·         Participation in software development projects related to language technology, with specific reference to text technology. S/he will take leadership in some of these projects. S/he will ensure that research, teaching, and development activities are aligned.
 

Minimum requirements

·         Degree in Language Technology/ Other relevant (NQF Level 7)
·         For Junior Lecturer, a Post-Grad Degree (Honour’s level or equivalent) Computer science/Computer engineering with relevant linguistics experience, OR a degree in Linguistics with relevant computer/programming experience (NQF level 8)
·         For Lecturer, a master’s degree in Language technology/Computational linguistics, OR Master’s degree in Computer science/Computer engineering with relevant linguistics experience, OR Master’s degree in Linguistics with relevant computer/programming experience (NQF level 9)
·         For Senior Lecturer, an applicable PhD in Language technology/Computational linguistics, Computer science/Computer engineering, or Linguistics (NQF level 10)
 
Experience
·         2/3/4 appropriate experience in natural language processing
·         2/3/4 appropriate experience in the use of several operating systems, including MS Windows and Linux
·         2/3/4 appropriate experience in text processing, machine learning, machine translation and relevant software
·         2/3/4 appropriate programming experience in at least one of the following languages: PERL, Python, C, C (plus, plus) , C#, Java, R
 
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Computer literacy and the ability to easily master new software
·         Knowledge of other languages
·         The ability to prioritise, manage and complete several tasks (i.e. multitasking), and to work and excel under time pressure
·         The ability to function as part of a team and adapt to its work method, and to work independently
·         Proven research and publication record
 
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Proper organisational abilities
·         Creative problem-solving capabilities
·         Proof of language proficiency in order to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU

The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
