NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY (POTCHEFSTROOM CAMPUS) FACULTY/ DIVISION: DVC IT DEPARTMENT: ELECTRONIC SERVICES POSITION NUMBER: N000014 VACANCY: Technician PEROMNES GRADE: P10 EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The successful candidate will report directly to the Maintenance Manager and will be co-responsible with the appropriate campus-IT’s, for maintenance on electronic systems across all sites of delivery of the NWU. The technician will be responsible for the following: • Support campus IT’s in attending to difficult faults • Do fault finding and repair on escalated / advanced faults and recommend calling in contractors/experts when required • Do final quality assurance and audits for newly completed and / or older installations • Handle minor/micro installations for electronics and AV systems • Participate in technology or equipment upgrade projects • Participate in after-hours standby services from time-to-time • Communication (written/verbal) (with students, clients, contractors, service- and parts suppliers alike) • Feedback(written/verbal) to be given to the manager with respect to all works mentioned above.
Job description

·         Investigate and clear up advanced or difficult faults or recommend calling in external resources
·         Work on all facets of repairs, small projects & technology upgrade projects
·         Do or assist with final quality assurance and audits on completed projects
·         Handle communication & customer liaison
·         Keep accurate records and administration of allocated work, cost of repairs and assets
·         Ad hoc Activities allocated
 

Minimum requirements

·         Diploma in Electronics is essential.
·         IT national certificate/diploma in Networking or Software is desirable.
·         Driver’s licence (Code EB) is essential.
·         Avixa qualified installer accreditation is desirable
·         Fire alarms SANS 10139 training registration is desirable.
·         PSIRA Technician legal appointment is desirable.
·         PSIRA membership is desirable.
·         Soldering and use of power tools.
·         Ability to identify and work with different type of cables.
·         Working with TCP/IP protocol, computers, and its application.
·         Ability to identify and work with different electronic components
 
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
·         Knowledge of analogue and digital sound systems, amplifiers, communication systems, TV distribution systems, access control system, intruder- and fire alarm systems.
·         Ability to use different cable and -connector types.
·         Ability solder and use power tools.
·         Be able to effectively use electronic measuring instruments.
·         Knowledge of and be able to effectively use MS office suite, email, and internet.
·         Ability to work on heights and be medically fit to obtain certification for working on heights
·         Knowledge of safe working practises
